One hell of a story. To large extent inspired Melville's tale of Ahab and the white whale. Critics panned Meville's book but now it stands as great and memorable literature. Go figure.
Though there are many parts of Owen Chase's account -- the part where right after the whale rams the ship for the first time, and comes out from beneath the ship, stunned, and floats alongside for a few brief moments stand out in my own memory. He writes that he thought to harpoon the whale while he had a chance, but was worried he wouldn't be able to kill the thing with one harpoon -- and that it would just make the whale more angry. He was hoping the whale would not want to injure itself further, and it would swim away on it's own BUT the whale shook it off, swam a short distance away, then sounded diving deep to come up under the ship, apparently ramming the ship's hull with it's head. That second blow from underneath was more powerful than the first, and opened up the hull enough to have it sink.
The rest of the ship's crew were out in the whaleboats hunting. They barely made it back in time to gather a few provisions. Not many survived the ordeal, or if those who were lost at sea ever made it to land (the ship's boats split into two groups -- one sailing one way, with the captain, and the other staying nearby to Chase before those too being lost) there is no record of them encountering other white men...
I’m not condemning Russian culture because two people were cannibals. I’m using Cannibalism, which we know some entire cultures were based on, as an example to prove that all cultures and religions are equal is a lie.
And yes, the abortion aberration in western culture is sick, and hopefully temporary.
