Because there is hunting on private property, unless you post no trespassing. There are a lot of woods in Maine and I would imagine some properties may be vacant at certain times of year. Anyway people are very strongly urged to wear safety orange when out in the woods during season. That said, a hunter should take appropriate care to know what they are shooting at. She was apparently looking for rocks and gems and stuff so she may have been on all fours or crouched. I am not making excuses for the hunter but if that’s the way your state does things then maybe make yourself very visible? There has not been a hunting death in Maine in 4 years. I think the national average is 2-3 per state annually. That’s a really low number when you think about it.
It’s interesting to me that the family member made that statement. Right off the bat they name 2 things that she should have done to help keep herself safe.

This seems so upside down to me. You are on your own property and get shot?

If you happen to be *from away* or a *flatlander* as non-natives are called Downeast... you’re supposed to know all the unwritten rules of the living [in Maine].

Seems to me, that the PTB favored the native hunter, over the woman *from away*. There is no excuse for killing another human being because you have not identified your target while hunting.
