When you’re getting everything ready, and anticipating it all, there’s a ‘magic’ in the air.
When I remember my Grandmother’s house at Thanksgiving and Christmas, for some reason I always remember gray November days seen outside the windows through sheer white chiffon drapes; and so much warmth, wonderful smells, a sense of something special about to happen, inside.
Seeing white chiffon curtains at a window will always bring back that feeling - go figure...
My grandmother in Palm Desert was a terrible cook. And I still have fond memories of the childhood thanksgivings in the desert. I remember the stuffing, the pie. And I was pretty young when I started making the pumpkin pies too. Mine were always the best, or so I thought. Cold mornings and evenings and t shirt hot sunny bright afternoons for about 1-2hours. Leftovers piled into white bread sandwiches the next day. My dad grabbing me to escape the shut in inlaws who never went anywhere, to take me clothes shopping (an excuse, for him, fun for me!).
My memories too. The best of days.
Grew up in Chicago, from November to March it was grey!
But we still had fun, even if we could barely move in our snowsuits!!
Summer was living in trees, huntin for snakes in the corn field, and riding down major hills no-handed on your string ray bike. Got your street crud by flipped over the handle bars.
The really nerdy kids got their tongues stuck frozen to their bike handlebars in the dead of winter!
Different world back then. Weird but fabulous.
We were blessed. We had a blast!!!
You brought me home with “white chiffon curtains”. I have the same memories at my parents house. All gone but not forgotten.
Amen. Nothing in the world like that feeling. For me it tends to hit right before Thanksgiving and then grows and increases in anticipation of Christmas. Today was cold, quiet November day — for me, just the type of day that triggers that feeling. Always brings to mind the happy yammer of voices and the clink of dishes and good smells, and you step outside for a breath and you feel warm inside out even though it’s freezing.
