CMA Awards start out somber, then mock Trump as Garth Brooks wins Entertainer of the Year

The 51st Annual CMA Awards saw the best in county music come together, but it was Garth Brooks that took home the top prize, being crowned entertainer of the year.

"The most important thing other than God Himself is you, the poeple who allow us to be in the greatest music ever. Country music man," the star said while accepting his award. "I love you."

The show started off on a somber note and quickly segued into political quips with hosts Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley mocking the president.

The evening began with the first verse of “Amazing Grace” performed by Eric Church before Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum, Darius Rucker and more teamed up to perform “Hold My Hand.”

Underwood and Paisley hosted the show for the 10th consecutive year, and Underwood opened the show by listing off recent tragedies, like the shooting in Las Vegas that claimed the lives of 58 country music fans at the Route 91 Harvest Festival last month.

Hahaha.

We listen to old country. There are multiple classic country stations where we live currently. so that’s good.

I watched the whole thing. The focus was entirely on her. Did you not see the hideous dress that was in tight focus throughout her performance? Even her ring echoed the awful decorations on her dress. Did you see the opening of the song? You couldn’t read the names of the people who were being honored. Eventually they came into focus but for the majority of the song it was all about her performance. I’ve seen people do this with the National Anthem where they make every trill about what they are doing with their vocal chords but showed no solemnity for the song. Come Home is a beautiful song, mournful and bittersweet but last night it was just another song sung by another “country” music performer. It was nice that they included it and the tribute but it was nothing more than a showcase for the songbird. Tears or no tears.

Every classic country station that went on the air around the midlands of SC never seemed to last long.

I’ve been on XM for so long that I rarely listen to local stations.

[Chorus:]
For the steel guitars no longer cry and fiddles barely play,
But drums and rock ‘n roll guitars are mixed up in your face.
Old Hank wouldn’t have a chance on today’s radio
Since they committed murder down on music row.
George Strait

I would rather listen to a fat girl fart than Paisley or that American Idol faker.

Garth Brooks is single-handedly responsible for the wussification of Country Music.

I'd reserve that honor for Rascal Flats.

Without Garth, there’s no Rascal Flatts.

Much of Petty’s music had “soul.” I don’t listen to country, never have, but when a co-worker had it playing in the past I couldn’t connect with it at all. But to each their own.

In the documentary, Tom did an impromptu cover of a Hank Williams song. No question, if he ever decided to do a country album, it would have been awesome. That's just how good he was.

Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old), If Tomorrow Never Comes, The Dance, Friends in Low Places, Unanswered Prayers, What She’s Doing Now, Longneck Bottle, and Rodeo are more or less country and good tunes.

Rascal Flats on the other hand are just pop and I find nothing country about them.

I was taken to see Garth a couple years ago and it just happened to land on 9/11. The pos never once during the entire show make any mention of what happened on that day. Piss on him, he’s a fraud.

The show should have started with a song or two.

Uh, it did. Amazing Grace and some other song.

Underwood joined in, “It’s fun to watch it that’s for sure, till little ‘Rocket Man’ starts a nuclear war. Maybe next time he’ll think before he tweets.”

What a dumb broad.

With speculation and fan outrage swirling on Twitter, Garth Brooks admitted backstage at the CMA Awards that he lip-synced his performance of “Ask Me How I Know” before winning the night’s highest honor for the second year in a row (and sixth time overall).

“We’re in the middle of 12 shows in 10 days. Not 10 shows in 12 days, 12 shows in 10 days,” he explained, per People magazine. “We did a game-time call on whether to sing the track or lip-sync, and decided to lip-sync. The voice just isn’t there anymore, and you want to represent country music as best you can.”

“The show should have started with a song or two ... Uh, it did. Amazing Grace and some other song”

You’re correct. I unknowingly didn’t get in range of the TV until after those songs.

They don’t want the “old” fans. They want the “new” fans because they sing “new” country. That means they sing rock.

There’s a reason Straight and Jackson retired. They took a parting shot with “Someone Committed Murder on Music City Row”. Surprised it got released.
