Quantum it is rather good
Mozilla today launched Firefox 57, branded Firefox Quantum, for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS. We have been running it for a month or so and it is rather good.
Mozilla calls Quantum “by far the biggest update since Firefox 1.0 in 2004”, but even ignoring the hyperbole it does bring much needed performance improvements and a visual redesign to the Firefox stable.
Firefox 57 for the desktop is available for download now on Firefox.com, and all existing users should be able to upgrade to it automatically. The Android version is trickling out slowly on Google Play, and the iOS version - which is usually updated separately from the other platforms - should eventually arrive on Apple’s App Store.
Mozilla says that Firefox Quantum is twice as fast as Firefox was six months ago, and according to the still in development) Speedometer 2.0 benchmark, it also uses 30 percent less memory than Chrome.
While Firefox has historically run mostly on just one CPU core, Firefox Quantum finally takes advantage of multiple CPU cores on desktop and mobile. Firefox Quantum features a faster CSS engine written in Rust that runs quickly, in parallel across multiple CPU cores, instead of running in one slower sequence on a single core.
Firefox Quantum prioritizes the tab being used before other tabs you have open in the background. It includes a new CSS engine called Stylo, which takes better advantage of multiple CPU cores that are optimised for low power consumption.

also where do you turn off firefox updates? My version says 54-
If you want to run legacy extensions, install FF ESR.
Most of them won’t run on 57.
I've already been using Brave on my phone and tablet. It's just that I've used Firefox for so long, that I've continued to use it on my PC. Maybe its time to go all Brave.
That did kind of annoy me, about losing some useful extensions, in the the replacements offered for the most popular of them aren’t as good.
You would think they could at least put out a request to extension developers to prepare new compatible extensions ahead of time.
Three I lost included Bookmark Favicon Changer, Flash Controls and NoScript. NoScript Suite Lite is far less flexible. And now I have to pause stupid autoplay videos on every dang news site.
Oh, yes, it also bollixed up my font sizes, ignoring old HTML font sizes. Oh, you wanted the picture 200% size, so obviously you want your fonts 200% larger as well.
k thanks- I’ll stick with firefox 54 for now- if i can find out how to turn off updates- in hte update panel it just says soemthign about search engine updates- not the browser update
It messed up items I do using Qualtrics and I reverted back to the previous version. I did not think it was any faster. I was disappointed. Also, it disables ad block features.
That site is overwhelming with the number of releases they’ve gone thru.
I had the previous version in my programs file. Or you can just go to the FF site to download it all over again. The bookmarks, etc. stay intact.
I’ve been using Opera since switching from FF. Might look more into Brave to see what thats all about.
Seems better. I like.
Where does one find Firefox ESR, and how long is it expected to be supported with security fixes? If it's for at least a few more months, it would be worth installing it while I continue to try out other browser. I'm leaning toward Opera. I want to like Brave but I'm not enamored with its lack of flexibility in script control (it is not as useful as uBlock Origin or even NoScript).

hmm- don’t have options panel- and in the general section there is no choice for firefox browser- i have

checked them all and not seeing a browser update choice- just a search engine update chocie
1. Type about:config in the search bar.
2. Scroll down to the below line and change from true to false:
app.update.auto: false
I like my Legacy add-ons ,Firefox must pay ,LOL
Version 56 froze my Options settings including not letting me get to my logins and passwords. I got around that by starting Firefox in Safe Mode to retrieve them. Definitely time to downgrade FF 52 ESR
