Nearly 3 million Dish Network subscribers in 18 cities, including Los Angeles, have lost access to their local CBS television station just two days before Thanksgiving, when many Americans want to watch NFL football.
The blackout comes amid a contentious fee dispute between satellite TV provider Dish Network and CBS Corp., which owns the television stations. Customers in New York, Chicago, Dallas, Philadelphia, Miami, San Francisco, Denver and other markets also were hit by the blackout, which in addition to the local stations includes three CBS cable channels: CBS Sports Network, Smithsonian Channel and Pop.
Dish has nearly 400,000 subscriber homes in the greater Los Angeles area.
Dish subscribers are in jeopardy of being without CBS over the Thanksgiving holiday, which would mean they would miss CBS Sports NFL and SEC football coverage, CBS said in a statement.
CBS is set to broadcast the NFL matchup between the Chargers and the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving.
I am very upset. Why does the customer always have to suffer in these situations? asked Jerry Horn, a Dish customer in Narrowsburg, N.Y. We pay the bills. Keep us connected during contract disputes!
The outage knocked WCBS-TV Channel 2 in New York one of Horns favorite stations from his channel offerings. I am going to miss NCIS, Bull and NCIS New Orleans, Horn said, referencing popular CBS shows.
The outage began at 11 p.m. PST on Monday. Thats when the companies previous carriage contract expired, leaving Dish without authorization to retransmit the signals of CBS stations. The two sides had been trying to hammer out a new contract since January with little progress, according to one person familiar with the matter but was not authorized to comment publicly.

“Millions of Dish customers lose CBS signals, face Thanksgiving without network’s football”
Dish pulls this BS at least once a year and often twice a year. Many years ago when they threatened to cut off Walking Dead, we switched to DirecTV and never looked back.
Oh, the horror.
But it's typical Dish versus the suppliers versus the buyers.
And the buyers lose...although the loss of CBS for NFL purposes is not something I would worry about.
Or for anything else CBS has, except maybe to watch the Bride of Frankenstein, the beastly Gayle King melt down every time some flaming liberal gets caught waving his weeny at somebody.
I’ve been watching the Cowboys on Thanksgiving since the mid 60’s (from ‘69 to ‘82 I was at the games). A family tradition. I have Dish and am hosting Thanksgiving. Fortunately my AppleTV has the CBS app and it broadcasts the local CBS station live. Crisis averted.
AFAIK the blackout rule went away...
hey..kewl...thanks for the info.
Again to a was the older receivers. another unpublished feature was it didn’t count against the number of stations you could record at the same time. so if it said you could record 3 shows at once you could record those 3 plus the OTA shows.
These were excellent buys that made us only buy 50 Mb Internet for $40/month instead. No more packages with cable for us. Everything is online and on-demand, anyway.
Amazon lets you download the complete program for offline viewing, if you want to.
We have Amazon Prime and it works well.
Thanks! After the Cowboys failed to put their boots on, I lost interest. PS that was a long, long time ago.
Agreed, but unless you go with a minimalist content package, the costs of cord cutting is sneaking up. Replacing full cable with full internet TV is pretty much a wash.
Our DSL is not fast enough for streaming, but fast enough for overnight torrenting.....;-)
Can be a very big loss, the Iron Bowl is on CBS.
RTR
What's this "air TV" you're talking about?
Snicker ...
SHHHHHH!!! Don't tell them, let them thrash about and whine like little girls!!
Couldn’t care less about the football games, but why should viewers pay for something they are not getting?
Have you looked into Kodi?
I left it up as an emergency backup because satellite can be affected by weather at the worst times....
If the complainers still support the NFL - good on the Dish problems...
