Fagen Sues Late Steely Dan Partner Over Band's Name, Music

Donald Fagen of Steely Dan is suing the estate of his late band mate, Walter Becker, over ownership of the band's name and music.

Fagen's attorneys filed papers last week in Los Angeles claiming that when Becker died in September, his estate was obligated to honor an agreement between the men stipulating that if one should die or otherwise leave the band, the other would buy back his "shares" in the group.

Becker's representatives are calling the suit "unwarranted and frivolous." They said Monday that the 45-year-old agreement was not in effect when he died.

Unless it’s a written contract it won’t work prolly

Fagen is being a Fagin pretty much

He could offer to buy them out at fair value

When Black Friday comes
I collect everything I’m owed
And before my friends find out
I’ll be on the road

One of my faves. I had wanted to see them the last couple of years but refused to pay over $150 a ticket for a decent seat. $90 was the cheap seats. Forget it.

My best fellow long hair had a 2002 tii and we’d go to the park where 1000 southern hippies congregated weekends

Pop in Do It Again and we were cool

Ultimate ride

Let them squabble with the lawyers. The rest of us will always have the music.

I cannot think of a single bad Steely Dan song. Can anybody name a Steely Dan song that is bad? I can't.

Even the songs that they used to play on the radio constantly, I am still not tired of. "Do It Again", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Reelin' In The Years" and "Hey Nineteen" were played constantly. But I still never tired of them.

Every Steely Dan song is good. I even like the Donald Fagen solo album called "The Nightfly" and he's not even dead yet. He will be but I'm in no hurry. Maybe he'll put out another album before he goes.

Those two made a career out of being difficult. But it seemed like they were on the same wavelength. The band might survive with either one or the other calling all the shots.

Becker was married to Elinor, a yoga teacher, and they had two children,[33] including adopted daughter Sayan.

Um, sorry Don, THEY get the proceeds.

Becker was pretty good, but he was not even in Donald Fagen’s league when it came to talent.

I never got into Steely Dan. I never hated them, just never into that band. My brother was a big fan. Maybe it’s the age?

I saw Steely Dan in 1974 at a small auditorium in Long Beach Ca. on their Pretzel Logic tour. They were absolutely amazing how they could play all of their music note for note.

Best concert of my life by far.

Fagan’s attorney is quoted in the article saying “It’s as valid as the day it was signed”, which suggests that there is a written contact.

Because it had been 45 years the agreement that Becker’s lawyers acknowledge existed “is no longer in effect”?

What do they offer to counter 45 year old agreement? Something in writing signed by both parties?

After Wayne Perkins recorded “Black & Blue” with The Rolling Stones, he came back home for a bit and joined his brother Dale’s band, the Alabama Power Band.

Their cover of “Dirty Work” was, I kid you not, better than Steely Dan’s original.
