For Vietnam veteran John Nugent, who served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, coming home to Newburgh, N.Y., meant some isolation, according to his son Chris, but his love of ham radio allowed him to reach out to other people throughout the world.
"It was tough for him. The radio made him feel comfortable, and helped with his transition," Chris Nugent said.
The veteran's call signal, WA2EQJ, came alive again Tuesday at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago, where the 75-year-old Nugent got his dying wish to broadcast on ham radio one more time.
"It's his one true love," said his son, a renowned chef and owner of Goosefoot in Chicago. "It was above and beyond everything. He built his first radio out of a cigar box when he was 9 years old."

Pre-Vietnam I was only WN4BYA. Then I began talking on tactical FM & VHF in tanks then helicopters & forgot about amateur radio. Will get back on the air with Yaesu xcvr & `boat anchor’ HQ-180A rcvr tnx to yr example OM. CU SK.

When my Husband was in Viet Nam He was in Saigon Hospital wounded. This was just a few days before Tet Hit and things were Hot. I was a Car Hop at a A W in San Leandro California. Boss hollered out the window said you have to come in you have a Red Cross priority call from Viet Nam. He took my place car hoping and I took my Call All made possible by one of these Special guys truly Special guys.

Hubby is Ret. SCPO, been a Ham a long time. Extra, teaches the math portion when they hold classes. He’s 77, N2LAZ -—DEAN. Just got his first new rig in 20 yrs. Still have to get the new Antena up. Still has his string 1 up.
Flag pole was MY priotity this time around. A 20ft 1. Tired of hanging the Colors from those holders on the house. They went up at 8 AM in honor of Pearl Harbor. Hsve to run a flood light out yet, in the spring.
