My friend who lives in Cleveland buys most of her clothes at this resale shop in Rocky River. Lots of money there. She sent me an Eileen Fisher long gray cardigan for my birthday from that resale shop. In absolutely perfect condition.

Glad you got your furniture set. And you were smart to take your nephew!

I dropped several sizes this year and needed to replace spring, summer, fall and winter wardrobes and sometimes twice. Thrift stores kept each total makeover cost less than 100 a season. Included work and casual clothes. Even got senior discount.

I have an antique headboard that belonged to Hubby’s aunt. It’s sort of a weird color, a cross between gold and blonde. Had kind of been looking for years for a dresser and nightstands to go with it but didn’t want to spend a lot of money since its in the guest bedroom. Was scrolling through FB Marketplace and bam! there it was. The perfect match. I like that you can check the seller’s history, how long they’ve been on, etc. Doesn’t seem like as big a scam as Craigslist. Anyway, the gal that sold it to me buys old furniture and resells it. She has a garage full. I don’t ‘do’ second handing but FB Marketplace was perfect for this.

I used to go garage saling all the time with the kiddos were little. Could outfit them for a year with $20. Kids grow so fast I would find brand new outfits with the store tags still on for 25 or 50 cents. Once found designer clothes for $1. Doesn’t make any sense to pay full price for kid stuff.

Furnished my first place with garage sale furniture. Antiques, mostly. Figured if they’d lasted a hundred years, they’d last for a while longer. Still have most of it. Typing at a $15 solid wood desk. Beside me is a $65 wardrobe that holds my sewing stuff (mostly free).

I would never do Craigslist, way too many crazies. With the FB Market Place you can do more research on the seller. Not to say that one shouldn’t be careful but I’ve seen some incredible bargains. I’ve seen nearly new washer and dryers, stoves, grills, etc. for sale really cheap because of people getting married and having two or remodeling or having to move and not needing those items. I’ve also seen some crazy stuff listed like used makeup. YUK!

The biggest problem, not that it is a problem for the seller, is that it is often first to show up with the cash and the truck, gets it. That can be a problem if you work or don’t have immediate use of a pickup truck or van and someone to help you move it.

I don’t believe in paying more for a purse than what cash will ever be in it. I’ll buy a new purse at the church sale about once every 5-10 years. This last one was $2.50. Found it online for $250! Big whoop. Don’t see what’s so exciting about a purse to charge that much.

Great way to start the day after Christmas, discussing some of my favorite things.

In the middle of a rain storm my wife saw me on a ladder cleaning out a clogged rain gutter. She came out and said, “You shouldn’t be doing that kind of work in a $150 Columbia jacket, you’ll ruin it.” I said “Its not a $150 jacket its a $7 Goodwill jacket.” ;o)

Oh, and not to hijack this thread I’ve also found amazing treasures in dumpsters. But that is for another time.

Might add that January will be a big haul month. People getting new stuff for Christmas will be donating their old stuff. Great deals ahead!

Found a glass table top in the dumpster one day many years ago. Not a scratch on it. Now covers the $20 garage sale pure wood coffee table! Fits perfectly after refinishing the table. Looks expensive retail!

I don’t have to worry about the crazies anywhere since I don’t usually do second hand anything. Trying to find a match for this headboard was a one off.

My closet is full of $12 sport coats from Goodwill.

Hart Schaffner & Marx.
Silk, camel hair, cashmere, etc.
Italian made.

Shoes include multiple pairs of essentially new Allen Edmonds hand-made in America. New: $400. Goodwill: $13.

Shirts by all the great makers, usually brand new. Retail: $50+. Goodwill: $6.99.

Most days, I’m completely GQ head to toe by Goodwill for under $50.

Just recently found a spit load of VHS tapes in the attic from the kids’ earlier days ( sporting events, graduations, pageant stuff, bozo show, weddings etc....)
wonder how am I going to convert these. Then it dawned on me, maybe “Savers” (a goodwill type of place) has old VHS players.
First good idea (according to my wife) I’ve had in awhile. Bought 2 for 6 bucks.(circa 1999) No remotes, but between the 2 of them, we were able to play all the old tapes.

That was exactly why we had the policy of refusing to sell it until the next day if the pricetag was missing or altered.

I managed thrift stores for forty-three years until finally retiring three years ago. Unfortunately, now I keep having these convoluted dreams about them—which I never did when I was working.

I could write a book on all of the things I’ve found in thrift shops. I’ve got a side business reselling mostly thrift items online. It started a few years ago as a way to teach my kids how to use their brains to earn a little extra money instead of asking me.

We started with less than $500 and initially worked out of our garage. Today we’ve got a 3,000 square ft. warehouse full of inventory and a photography studio. I operate it by outsourcing as much as I can and I pay local contract workers for the rest. Because I worked hard to systematize every function, it’s almost on autopilot.

I’ve always been a “saler”. Now, not so much. I need to start downsizing a bit. My household has nearly all been furnished with wonderful finds from resale shops, consignment shops, garage sales, estate sales. I love the quality I find and I love vintage to antiques.

It’s hunting....almost like the lottery.

YES!
I like nice wool sweaters, but my Scottish DNA does not like the expenditure.

Found a 'new with tags', Nordstrom cashmere sweater $300.00 plus!!! I gladly paid the few dollars asking price.
