Word For The Day,

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

HORTATIVE

[HOOR ta tev]

hear it pronounced

adjective

"We give nothing so freely as advice," observed French writer François de la Rochefoucauld in 1665. Hortative and exhort (meaning "to urge earnestly") are two words that testify to our eagerness to counsel others. Both trace to Latin hortari, meaning "to urge." Hortative has been used as both a noun (meaning "an advisory comment") and an adjective since the 17th century, but the noun is now extremely rare. You may also encounter the adjectives hortatory, exhortatory, and exhortative, all of which have the same meaning as hortative.

Advice is given in many ways. Sometimes by imperious edict, sometimes by threat, sometimes by the sweet voice of reason. Always do we exhort others to do that to which we most aspire.
The hortative blandishments of a Trump tweet are gentle rain as compared to the dhimmitudinal brandishments of an Obama threat.

The poster may seem prescriptive regarding the use of the Word of the Day but I consider her to be hortative.

The Latin teacher gave a repeated and explicit hortative, that we are to learn the hortatory subjunctive.

Despite daily hortative remarks from all sides, President Trump continues to use Twitter in his own unique way.

Well, in the interest of raising the level of discourse.

“I don’t think Steve should have taken that prostitute to the local CBS affiliate. It’s just no right to take a hortative station.”

I thought at first, this word I’d never heard, might have something to do with the study of time.

Hillary’s Steamless Engine

Huff and puff
Snort and sniffle
“Old news… next question”
Gallons of whiskey rotted
the old crooked windbag
Hardly a muscle left to flog her
admirers with another hortative hoot
About “Old News.”

While I’d prefer a more fiscal conservative
Trumps first year was still superlative
Turn down the heat
With fewer tweets
Is my best considered hortative

Horology (via Latin horologium from Greek ὡρολόγιον, from ὥρα hṓra "hour; time" and -o- interfix and suffix -logy; literally "the study of time")[1][2] is the art and/or science of measuring time.

I guess I listened to too much S-Town over the summer.

It is overcast and 41-since outdoor work is not an option, I’m working indoors finishing and printing invoices to be collected by Friday-

Many of pres Trump’s comments
Are just given as hortative advice
But they give liberals the vapors
And they whine that he isn’t nice

They must have forgotten about
The insults of Obama-their “god”
As they have their little tantrums
And get their panties all in a wad

From saying police acted stupidly
To giving Ferguson rioters a pass-
Everyone knows payback is a bitch-
Especially when it burns their ass...
