S-E-C! S-E-C! To the chagrin of most of America, it's Alabama-Georgia for all the marbles

The chant boomed out early in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, and then again late, and a third time even later for good measure. And although it’s enough to trigger a collective gag reflex in 39 states plus several U.S. territories, it’s a fact-based champion’s chant. “S-E-C! S-E-C!” the Alabama fans thundered, when the final score of the Rose Bowl was announced and league brethren Georgia had advanced to the College Football Playoff title game.

Doesn’t change a legitimate claim to the national championship. Which I think is great since I think thev4 team format is silly.

The one thing I don’t want to see happen with College Football is for it to become like college basketball, where nobody cares about it until the NCAA Tournament.

You know Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, etc, are always going to be in it, even if they lose a few games.

What I like is that every week is potentially an elimination week for a team.

You can claim all you want; it doesn't make it so. ☺

Hillary Clinton purportedly won the popular vote. But she is not president because the rules are winner of the Electoral vote.

In the same way, in the current format, being undefeated does not make one the national champion; winning the playoff does. Unfair? perhaps. Reality? yes.

Now, a question for you: In your heart of hearts, do you think that UCF could beat any of the two of the four playoff teams in back-to-back weeks, especially given that the four playoff coaches would have weeks to prepare for UCF. Yes, they beat a 10-3 Auburn, but Malzahn is 1-4 in Bowl games.

I don’t disagree, but I neither have the insight nor the ability to make that happen, and most of us here do not.

For the near future, the playoffs are going to be like the weather...

The coach, qb, and others are also claiming it. Their attitude about the final playoff game was to just shut it down, that it’s all over.

Then their claims are moving the goalposts. At the beginning of the season, all teams knew the way to be #1 was to make it into the playoffs and win.

And for UCF, they knew that even if they were undefeated, they still had long odds of making the playoffs because of the conference they are in.

Of course, I don’t think they expected to be the last undefeated team in I-A.

Well maybe then those other conferences need to go to the FCS, where they do have playoffs. Of course the folks in the Dakotas won’t like that idea. ;)

If they are part of the FBS, then there needs to be a way that all teams in the FBS control their destiny, and know if they go unbeaten through the regular season and playoffs, they will be National Champions.

I don’t think they had a say. My memory says they were shut out by the big 5 and the networks.

So, they have an entirely legitimate claim. I’m glad to see it happen.

The basketball tournament is so broad that there are no questions. Hopefully, the football tourney will get to the same legitimacy.

The UCF snafu pushes it in the right direction.

The Playoff Board of Managers includes a representative from the AAC, UCF's conference. If the AAC thought this was unfair, they should not have contracted themselves into the playoff system.

So, no, they don't have a claim. They would have been better off not being part of the system, then at least their complaint would have merit.

To follow up: But they did join, because there was money to be made by the AAC. If they rejected it, no $$$.

lost to Michigan State on a last minute field goal in a horrid weather conditions

Was that the game when there were "horrid weather conditions" for OSU and balmy, clear and dry conditions for MSU?

Whatever, Bama and Saban have won four of he last eight national championships and can make it five of the last nine next Monday night. That seems like a reasonable share for the Crimson Tide.

Some of these Bama and SEC haters are so exercised today, I think we should just rename the NCAA playoffs the Nick Saban Invitational, and always fill the top four with Saban and three of his past assistants who are now head coaches or coordinators at other schools, until Saban retires. It's Saban and former, six-year assistant Kirby Smart Monday night.

And that Bama team that lost to OSU was the third or fourth worst of the Saban era. Our QB threw three interceptions whereas, in the four championships we won, there were no interceptions.

They are undefeated.

They beat Auburn.

Auburn beat Alabama.

Auburn beat Georgia.

You left one off.

Georgia beat Auburn

And such comparisons just don't work, anyway.

To be taken seriously, these non-Power 5 teams will have to schedule and beat more than one major school during only one season.

The SEC only plays 8, and then they schedule cupcake teams like FCS Mercer (Alabama) which even in a lower division was only 5-6 this year.

Bama tried to schedule those perennial Top 10 powerhouses - Army and UNLV - but some other team already had them on their schedule. Let's see, now who was that?

Like I said, they really had no choice. I’m in an AAC town.

Just because you agree to something in your short term benefit that doesn’t mean it’s in your long term benefit. Not does it mean you can’t take advantage of opportunities for change.

Auburn beat Georgia in regular season

So, what does that mean? Auburn beat Georgia at Auburn, and in the rematch, Georgia beat them on a neutral field.

Army was 10-4 and winner of a bowl game, FCS Mercer was 5-6 in a second division no less. UNLV beat Fresno State, you know the team that Alabama played this year. So much for these powerhouses the SEC plays out of conference.

The level of competition from an additional game in a power 5 conference is considerable especially when several SEC heavy weights schedule cupcakes like UL Monroe (Auburn), Troy (LSU), Mercer (Alabama) and The Citadel (Clemson). At least Georgia played an in state power 5 rival in GA Tech.

BINGO....when I voiced this possible scenario once the bowls were announce I was flamed. One Freeper claimed UCF would be a scrimmage game for Auburn.
