A.) approved (Att'y Gen. 1944), the federal statute in effect at that time, the candidate could not acquire American citizenship, because he was born out of the country and only one parent was an American, and she was disqualified under the Act because she did not have five continuous years of residency following her fourteenth birthday before the child was born, as she was only 18. Sen. Obama could not have become an American citizen except through a naturalization process at the time of his birth.
