Vikings beat the Saints with the most spectacular comeback possible
SBNation ^ | January 14th 2018 | Jeanna Thomas

This one was a tale of two halves, and there was plenty of drama with four lead changes in the final three minutes. The Vikings took a 7-0 lead on their first offensive possession and the defense kept Drew Brees off rhythm in the first half. After the first quarter, Brees was 1-of-6 passing for three yards and a pick.

Could they have been just a little more creative on that third and short?

Oh I agree that Willams should have let Diggs catch the ball and then tackle him and the game would have been over but I can understand Willams possible fear on a pass interference cal because the Saints were called all game on some major pass interference calls against them.

There has been some speculation that Payton called that final time out to make sure nobody committed PI.

More and more I see plays like this, and I’m not so impressed with the play on offense, but more upset at the stupidity of the defense.

That's about as effective as telling somebody not to think about the pink elephant.

He didn't want the pass interferance / early hit. Just a split second decision that was incorrect and being incorrect happened in this case to be triple deadly after he took out the other guy. I made many of them playing soccer this morning. Course I'm not paid.

That said ... unlucky. It was a wrong decision made worse by making it at the wrong time and then taking out his own guy.

But the best teams HAVE these mistakes and still win. If you're in a position where that choice decides the game, you weren't good enough - you left it to chance.

That why, of course, the pats will crush the Vikings in a semi boring Super Bowl :-)

Smart move? He looks up and sees nobody between him and the goal line. What’s else would he do?

“Could they have been just a little more creative on that third and short?”

You mean the Saints? I thought that bit was going to be the old flea-flicker at first, but I loved it anyway. Like I said, I’m a fan of razzle-dazzle plays every now & then.

When you look at the play from behind, it is almost comical how much Williams missed Diggs by. He had a clear shot at him and all he had to do was let him come down with the ball. Williams missed him by several feet and was way to the right of him. It looked for all the world like he intentionally missed him.

“but I can understand Willams possible fear on a pass interference call”

Yup, since a game can’t end with a defensive foul, the Vikes would have had at least a Hail Mary shot left.
