Wellllll, I agree.
I have some photos of Jack Benny and Dinah Shore entertaining the troops in WWII. They are on a flatbed truck with a piano and microphone amidst bombed out buildings.
They were my Father’s photographs.
I too have read that he was one of the really nice guys.
valuable photos!
Jack was my all time favorite celebrity. I listened to him on the radio, saw all of his movies and watched him on television. He was the the best comedian that ever lived.
Loved him.
Robber: “Your money or your life!!”
Long pause......
Benny: “I’m thinking, I’m thinking!”
I liked Benny’s low-key humor.
He could get laughs with just a raised eyebrow.
I loved the appearance he made on Laugh In.all the regulars would say to him “keep it moving, keep it moving” as if he was a beginner in showbiz. Then one of the women,I think it was Teresa Graves, gives him an exuberant “Ow!” and he looks at the camera, puzzles, and repeats “Ow?”
Still listen to his shows every week on Radio Classics. His wife, Mary LIvingstone, was the perfect foil for him. And he was surrounded by an incredible supporting cast of Eddie “Rochester” Anderson, announcer Don Wilson, singer Dennis Day, musician Phil Harris, and the incomparable Mel Blanc. There were certain repeating themes and seasonal characters that carried on for decades. My favourite was Benny tormenting an unfortunate department store clerk, Mel Blanc at his best, every year just before Christmas.
I think he was Johnny Carson’s idol.
What a coincidence. Im listening to Jack Benny and Fred Allen right now.
I just saw a movie with him that was made during WW II. It took place in Germany and he played a double agent and went after Hitler. Good actor, too.
He was only 39 when he died.
Jack Benny and other comedians of his era were also what comedians are supposed to be: funny. Today’s “comedians” leave me unamused
I saw what you did there.
He was my favorite too. I watched his show for many years then it was off for a long time.
When some station started showing re-runs, I eagerly began to watch them again only to be disappointed. He did not seem as good as I remembered.
Then after a few episodes he got good again. I think you had to get used to all his mannerisms, subtle jokes etc. A lot of repeated themes.
He was a great one.
I tape his tv show off of JLTV and it is still funnier than any show I have seen in years!!
