"Important National Security Questions"
February 1, 2018 | Shotgun

Can someone please explain to me just what are the "Important National Security Questions" that are supposedly in the FISA Memo? We are talking about a counter intelligence operation conducted by the FBI on American citizens. Surely the memo does not go into actual process/equipment used to gather intelligence. Since this was an operation conducted on American soil I wouldn't think we are talking about exposing HUMINT assets overseas. Anyway, I thought I would ask all you Freepers out there that have more insight and experience with stuff then I do, could share that with us.

My understanding is the FBI can classify anything they want but is there a process to determine if the classification is actually valid or do we just have to their word and trust them. It all seems to be a little to convenient and makes it easier to hide behind.

Sure - Obama’s attempt to impose martial law and a dictatorship in our country. EVERYTHING was geared to that.

Since EVERYONE agrees that the memo doesn't reveal 'sources and methods', and not having seen it, my guess is that the "important issues" deal with some swamp dwelling TRAITOR's comfortable retirement at a resort of their choosing, not Club GITMO.

Me too, but I’m tired of being spoon fed this crap. Now they want their names redacted! This is the pinnacle of in your face arrogance. And all the more reason to shut down the FBI.

How much power should reside in a secret court.

That’s a darn good question. National security or not.

Bingo. Rush stated a week or so ago that National Security would be trotted out as a reason to keep the details hidden.

I always find it humorous when politicians decide that national security is an important issue for them, based on my 30 years working on classified projects.

The only national security reason to redact anything would be the names of foreign spies that helped on the dossier. Other than that they are trying to save themselves.

They fear that all cases that have been tried will have to be retried or people released from jail if any of the people in the FBI and DOJ were a part of this mess and had something to do with a case....but so be it. That is not a national security problem nor is saving the FBI and DOJ.....they need exposure and cleaning up for the American people to have faith once again in those institutions. This was a sedition problem and thus an American people problem, They need to know exactly what the government has been up to.

I’m getting a whiff of “need to protect the guilty.” As in, deep state FBI our people guilty.

Which may not be true. But it’s creating the appearance of such. I guess we’ll see if/when it is released.

None at all, if they won’t tell us what they are. Usually when there is a legitimate reason it’s intelligence sourcing: we don’t want to reveal our abilities and limitations with respect to intel gathering. The most prevalent illegitimate reason is that it might embarrass somebody. If what they want redacted is the names of the accused, that’s the reason and there is no legitimate security concern at all.

May be they need to develop a FISA grand jury lottery app that randomly selects 1 person from each state. It notifies those persons of a warrant request, directs you to a secure website to review the “evidence” and then vote yea or nay. The Judge sees the final tally and takes action based on that.

Each new warrant request will select 50 new jurist. Then at least were relying on someone other than a prosecutor to sway the judge with potential phony information.

Until a couple days ago, I thought the FISA Memo was the actual document that was used to petition the court for a national security wiretap.

Instead, it's just a personal memo written by Devin Nunes.

I presume Nunes wrote the memo to brief committee colleagues about secret testimony or secret documents that he read, but which were not available to the full committee.

In any event, why not redact, then release, ALL the FISA documents to the public, plus the Nunes memo?

Pitiful - Edward Snowden is telling the Russians everything he knows about the NSA. Julian Assange has leaked thousands of pages of secret USA government documents to various news organizations. But, USA citizens are not allowed to view even redacted documents relating to the unlawful Obama-Clinton attack on the Republican Party!

Individuals, businesses, and countries may not want to cooperate with our agencies in the future if there is the possibility that illegal activity can be exposed by congress. It’s not enough to let them escape prosecution, they don’t want the bad publicity.

Even employees of those agencies may not want to perform certain illegal actions if they may be exposed. And they NEEEEED to do illegal things to protect us from terrorism/child-porn/drugs/godzilla/EVERYTHING.

I disagree with this as strongly as possible. But that’s what I’ve taken from a few of the quotes I’ve read.

The outed perpetrators are threatening to destroy the agencies? Didn’t McCabe threaten to torch the FBI if he was punished?

"....the FBI can classify anything they want...."

And president Trump can declassify any document he wants at his discretion. That's his prerogative as the president.

I would say that the exposing an attempted coup to overthrow our government is indeed a national security issue.

and as I recall it has always been illegal to classify information simply because it is embarrassing to the government

Maybe it’s that the FISA court delivered surveillance warrants like “pizza” during the Obama administration?

Roger that.

I don't know about the government being embarrassed, if that's even possible.

But individuals at the DOJ and FBI who've been carrying on criminal activity to get the president, will surely be embarrassed when their names hit the headlines.
