The demarcation line in movie attendance was about 1965. That marked the last year there was overwhelming family movies out, movies without gross profanity, nudity, etc.. You can see the very real dramatic decline in attendance after that.

1965 did seem like the last "normal" year, didn't it? I was just a kid then, but I sensed, the following year, everything getting weird.

I am not sure what movie started things being different and pushing the envelope but it could have been “Blow Up” with David Hemmings in 1966. Although that film was pretty tame compared to “Midnight Cowboy” in 1968.
