The legends of the Jersey Devil stretch back hundreds of years, and like many such legends are a mixture of half-truths, twisted perspective, and blurry recollections.
Sightings of this apparently mythical creature continue today, however, leading some to suspect there may be more to the accounts than just mere stories.
Before we look at the origins of one of Americas strangest and most enduring legends, check out the video below. It looks at the basics of the Jersey Devil legends.

That’s actually the dreaded flying terrier. A frightful sight to behold, especially when they hit the ground again.

I went through a little 'Jersey Devil' phase a few years back. Read a couple of books on the stuff and was surprised to see there were quite a few interesting persons who stated 'sightings' of the JD. Including: One of the first reported Jersey Devil sightings was in 1812 when Joseph Bonaparte, Napoleons older brother, claimed he saw the Jersey Devil while hunting near his Bordentown estate. 1909: While testing cannon balls at Hanover Mills Works in the Pine Barrens, Navy Commander Stephen Decatur reportedly saw the creature and shot it. Mary Ritzer Christianson told Weird NJ that she got the "heebie jeebies" one night in 1972 when she spotted the Jersey Devil on Greentree Road. Christianson was driving from Blackwood to Glassboro when she says she saw a towering figure crossing the road about 25 feet behind her car. She described the figure as standing taller than the average man, with thick haunches like a goat and a huge, wooly head. Scully and Mulder:
So my husband, his daughter and I went to NJ to visit his parents and took a Jersey Devil Hunt drive to South NJ. Stopped at a local general store in the vicinity of the Mother Leed's House, guy asked what we were doing in NJ, (smilingly) and when we told him were were on a Jersey Devil Hunt, the smile disappeared and he told us he hadn't heard of anyone doing that in a few years now. Only in a few years!!!?

The place would be overrun with Devil Dogs, if not for Artie Lange.

Survivalist/Tracker Tom Brown Jr. has admitted to ‘playing’ the Jersey Devil to scare away illegal dumpers and others up to no good in the Pine Barrens.

I think The Hunted with Tommy Lee Jones was based on TBJ. Loved that book.
