Trump Returns to His Democratic Roots
National Review ^ | March 7, 2018 | Michael Tanner

Posted on 03/09/2018 12:55:44 PM PST by TBP

It has largely slipped under the radar screens of partisan hatred in Washington, but has anyone noticed that in the last couple of months Donald Trump has become . . . a Democrat? Of course, for most of his life, Trump was a Democrat, a faithful fundraiser for Chuck Schumer and Hilary Clinton, and comfortably liberal in most of his positions. But once he decided to run for president as a Republican, he underwent a total transformation, becoming an arch-conservative. And during his first year in office, he governed like a conservative Republican, slashing taxes and regulations, appointing conservative judges, and throwing money at the military.

Since January, though, President Trump has been returning to his Democratic roots. In the past two months, he has embraced a big-spending budget deal that funds nearly all the Democrats’ top priorities and pushes deficits over $1 trillion for as far as the eye can see. He also proposed a massive new infrastructure program. And now, he has embraced a trade policy right out of the Bernie Sanders playbook.

In fact, during the 2016 campaign, Bernie had explicitly called for tariffs on steel. Hillary Clinton had also adopted a remarkably anti-trade posture. Many people are rightly pointing out that Trump’s rejection of the Trans-Pacific Partnership has left the United States dangerously isolated and economically disadvantaged in Asia, but they forget that Hillary too had campaigned on pulling out of the trade pact.

Its about Jobs, Jobs, Jobs.

Both cut taxes and regulations.

Trump is ending the fake, unfair Trade deals.

He is also getting our borders and immigration under control. Reagan failed completely at this.

I’m old enough to remember when the National Review was run by Bill Buckley and was actually a good mag.

I thought so too, but as I matured it began to sink in to me that the NR message was aimed more at East Coast elites--who were the original RINOs--than us in the West who rejected Nixon, embraced Goldwater, Ashbrook and Reagan and wanted to have less rather than more government at all levels.

I let my subscription lapse after the Buchanan-is-an-anti-Semite cover story.

If people had listened to the National Review, Hillary would be President right now, free speech on the Internet squelched, the borders fully opened, the SCOTUS in Democratic hands, and Julian Castro being cue’d up for 2024.

A tariff is a tax. Then we had "tax cuts" which were really minuscule and a lot went to illegals.

Then we raised spending astronomically. If a president give a micro tax cuts, but radically increases spending, guess what, that is a tax increase. Bush did it. That money doesn't just magically appear out of the either.

Reagan may have disappointed on immigration, but so far Trump hasn't proved anything.

If the U.S. wanted to decrease immigration, the no. 1 thing would be to get rid of the incentives to illegal immigration. That isn't happening. The opposite, Trump gave them a tax cut.

The #NeverTrump is strong in this one!

President Trump cures Cancer: Trump decimates Cancer Hospitals! Thousands of doctors and nurses laid off!

President Trump walks on water: Trump can’t swim!

President Trump gets the North Korean’s to agree to denuclearize: Trump is trying to distract from Stormy Daniels! (can’t make this one up, see Morning Joe this morning!)

Aaah the purists! The same purists that preferred Clinton based on principal.

When Trump refuses to sign a conservative bill, then I will worry. Trump can only be as conservative as the bills he is given.

I wish purists would realize that there are NO conservatives in DC, period. And they all hate Trump.

When you export an industry to China, what happens to American workers.

Many need to be supported by social services which increases our taxes.

China has become a superpower because of Free Trade, American not so much.

We always knew that Trump was going to be a mixed bag when we voted for him. We all knew that he was good friends with Bill and Hillary in the past and supported Dem positions. We all knew that an infrastructure spending binge was coming. We all knew that he was liberal on social issues. I still voted for him because he is 100% better than corrupt, crooked liberal zealot Hillary as president. In fact, until recently, he has far exceeded my expectations in terms of governing as a conservative. If he now imposes steel tariffs and proposes spending, then so be it. Its still better than what we would have gotten under the witch.

Watching National Review writers soil their skivvies is one of the most satisfying parts of the Trump Presidency. Don’t you agree?

Trump can only be as conservative as the bills he is given.

That is not what Trump promised he was some kind of fire-breathing bulwark against the establishment and master negotiator. He said he came to go against the establishment, not to cater to them.

Now he gets to hide behind Mitch McConnell and be a timid lamb, who can only do what McConnell tells him to do? No sale.

He had a year as president with a GOP House and Senate, and he let the Dems control Washington. Trust me, the Democrats know they scored a major victory.

Trump's tariff policy is far closer to that of the traditional Republican Party than it is to that of the Democrats.

From Lincoln to Hoover, the Republican Party advocated high tariffs to protect American industry. The party was the heir to the Whig Party and the Federalist Party, which were in favor of protective tariffs. Lincoln was an admirer of Henry Clay, who in turn followed in the footsteps of Alexander Hamilton. Clay's "American System" called for the development of American industry via tariff walls. In his day, the competition was England, Prussia, and France; in our time, China, Japan, South Korea, et. al.

Granted, tariffs are not pure laissez faire. However, we must consider the manipulation China and other nations, rigging the market against American imports. We also have an issue with our highly regulated economy, vs. less regulation in many competitors. True free trade only works where all nations have unregulated, unsubsidized markets.

He's winning over voters in the rust belt to assure his reelection.

All this whining is coming from the business wing of the GOP, which doesn't give a damn about American workers. It wants to run the GOP rather than just have a seat at the table. That has made it difficult for Republicans to win Presidential elections.

The NET impact of Trump's policies (corporate tax cut, billions cut in regulations and tariffs) still results in more money for businesses to expand while increase the number of jobs in the country.
