Fleetwood Mac Fires Lindsey Buckingham
Rolling Stone ^ | April 9th, 2018 | Unattributed

Fleetwood Mac has fired Lindsey Buckingham after a disagreement over the band's upcoming tour, Rolling Stone has confirmed. The band announced Monday that Mike Campbell of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and Neil Finn of Crowded House will replace him.

News of Buckingham's departure initially broke when former Fleetwood Mac guitarist Billy Burnette shared an April 4th tweet that has since been deleted, saying: "Breaking news: Lindsey Buckingham is out but I'm not in." Rolling Stone has confirmed Buckingham's departure, though no specific tour dates have been announced.

Fleetwood Mac issued a collective statement about the news, saying: "We are thrilled to welcome the musical talents of the caliber of Mike Campbell and Neil Finn into the Mac family. With Mike and Neil, we’ll be performing all the hits that the fans love, plus we’ll be surprising our audiences with some tracks from our historic catalogue of songs. Fleetwood Mac has always been a creative evolution. We look forward to honoring that spirit on this upcoming tour."

Mick Fleetwood added, "Fleetwood Mac has always been about an amazing collection of songs that are performed with a unique blend of talents ... We jammed with Mike and Neil and the chemistry really worked and let the band realize that this is the right combination to go forward with in Fleetwood Mac style. We know we have something new, yet it’s got the unmistakable Mac sound."

Buckingham joined Fleetwood Mac in 1974 along with Stevie Nicks. He wrote and sang many of their most memorable songs, including "Go Your Own Way," "Tusk" and "Second Hand News." He left in 1987 shortly before the Tango On The Night tour (where he was replaced by Billy Burnette) and rejoined in 1996 for The Dance reunion tour.

Anyone who disagrees with Lindsey is wrong.

On the plus side, you know longer have to play along while your ex-girlfriend sings yet another song about why she hates you.

Oh Well also, although Part 2 is a bit long and I think they ought to have recapped Part 1 to finish.

And sometimes I wonder how it would have sounded if Judas Priest had covered Oh Well instead of Green Manalishi . . . but then again, JP also covered Spooky Tooth’s Better By You, Better Than Me and Joan Baez’s Diamonds And Rust 😥

Or...part of the “fun” of following a band is seeing what new drama they’ll stir up next. Could be he just didn’t want to play on the coming tour and was willing to give up his spot and split for it. Then they created drama around it. And he’ll be back later. Prog band mates rotate in and out one another’s groups incessantly.

Agree. There have been so many incarnations, but it seems like the big division is between the B/N era (when they became very popular) and the time before (when they were much more interesting IMO).

A lot of people would be surprised to find out that they wrote Black Magic Woman.

Bare Trees was also an excellent album.

I listened to Fleetwood’s (Lahaina) bar’s house band a couple of months ago from the outside covering rock classics (lots of stones tunes). without female lead singer Gretchen Rhodes, the sound was loose— sloppy playing, including drums. Gretchen Rhodes came on and did some FM covers and nailed it. They wanted $100/ticket. I passed, and went back to my hotel for the evening. I know that live is different from studio but this was worse than normal, like a garage band that anyone could put together.

I do like FM studio albums, SN and LB.

Pretty sure you have it backwards. They needed a guitarist at the time and Nicks was extra baggage that eventually worked out for them. She was a package deal though so that is correct.

Haven’t heard “Hypnotized” in years. That was a good one.

Who really care’s, the world is in turmoil and people are worried about some rock band. Get over it.

“There have been so many incarnations, but it seems like the big division is between the B/N era (when they became very popular) and the time before (when they were much more interesting IMO).”

While musically uninteresting, that era brought them riches beyond the wildest dreams. The women LOVED it.

I think they are in the top 3 for records sold, all time.

Preferred Peter Green, but that was another era and music style for the band.

That’s so simple and one dimensional, I won’t even laugh.

Way back in the 70’s, I used to get Lindsey B. mixed up with Eric Carmen of The Raspberries. My friends at school quickly straightened me out, saying there was no comparison at all!

Rumor has it the disagreement was over the color of their little weekday prescription pill holders.

Fleetwood Mac is like Jason - Just die already.

Seriously, the band should have been renamed after Peter Green and Danny Kirwan departed. Just a totally different thing.

I know this shows my ignorance, but, who exactly fired him? Fleetwood Mac fired him, but he’s a member of the group. Does the group vote to expel members , or did he leave on hearing they didn’t want him, or did he voluntarily leave due to problems?

Not absolutely certain on this, but I recall reading one time that in 1969, while still the Peter Green incarnation, the band outsold the Stones and the Beatles combined. As it should have IMO.
