"About 50% of bites are dry"

Don't know about Eastern poisonous snakes, but I heard that this is true of rattlers. Normally, they use their venom for killing prey. It wouldn't be good to waste it, as it takes time to produce and they might need it again sooner than expected. So in an "offensive situation" they judge the weight of the prey and inject enough to kill it, but no more.

But in a "defensive situation" when they are confronted by a dangerous predator - including humans, their bite is a quick "fight or flight" reflex - perhaps even a panicky one, rather than a carefully planned attack. As such, they don't have either the time or the wits or both, to calculate how much venom to inject. So on the one hand, you might get a bite with no venom at all. Or on the other hand, you might get the entire sac of venom injected into you. Flip a coin.

Smart thinking - and if she gets bit your only out $20.

The hoe I would use would move a different kind of snake.

And I wouldn't use a hoe that costs only $20!

Yeeeeeech!

Jumper cables connected to a car battery will also work.

Well... maybe they would if you shoved one of them up your rectum and the other down your throat.

After killing the snake, did you cook it up for a snake treat?

Maybe you could demonstrate on yourself, but you might not be able to talk out of your rear end for a while. Wait that’s a plus.

I was out one the mesa on sunset, admiring the rattlers from the comfort of my car (they like the last bit of sun)

I pulled up real close to watch, and the bugger went right into the wheelhub of the car!

Holy jumping Jesus on a pogo stick! Where’s he going?
I punched it.
SLoop! he goes in like a string on a yo yo!

Lord what do I do now? I have visions of him in the engine compartment, coming into the cab through the ventilation system LOL

I get home and need to investigate, I make a bunch of noise expecting him to rattle.
I’m beating on the wheel with the tire iron...

Silence...
Cautiously I removed the wheel..

Snake burger LOL

" Jumper cables connected to a car battery will also work."

You will never get a shock from a car battery. I have changed many batteries with my bare hand touching the positive terminal with a wrench and the other hand touching the negative ground. Not even a tingle. If you really want to get a shock, disconnect a spark plug wire and let it spark onto a finger while touching a metal part of the car. Watch out for your head. It may hit the car hood as you jump.

It’s not purely anecdotal. Studies were done. And too many cases of people being helped to just brush aside.

If you see a poisonous snake in the middle of the road, keep driving and run over it.

I killed an Eastern diamondback around 20 years ago which was just under 7 feet long. I posted the photo here on FR. Not a record but not too far off either.

Probably killed 30 or more venomous snakes in my life. They are not as numerous as sidewinders in some Western states but they are the largest.

Actually they are the largest by weight of any native North American snake.

However, studies at thr U of VA concluded that a moccasin will not bite even if stepped on. They just want to get away. I won’t test it.
