Police say pot to blame in deadly Fremont car crash

A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana Tuesday night after a multicar crash killed three in Fremont.

The collision, which involved five vehicles, occurred around 9:30 p.m. on the northbound I-880 near Stevenson Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol. Three people were killed when they were ejected from an Escalade — a woman, a teen and a child.

Five other people, four of whom are juveniles, were injured in the crash.

Similar to other states that have legalized pot, California now relies on drug recognition experts — police officers trained during a two-week course to conduct cognitive tests and notice other physical signs of drug-related impairment during a motor vehicle stop — to make the initial determination that a driver is under the influence.

A bill proposed in the state Senate last month calls for a one-year driving suspension for any motorist under 21 caught with marijuana in his or her system.

“This thread is direct contradictory evidence to that statement. It seems to be very easy to make that claim.”

heh. Good point.

I’m just glad that I did all my smoking and driving in the ‘70s and ‘80s when pot was illegal and therefore had no affect on driving skills!

If I’m going into a gun fight, I’ll wear my bulletproof vest. If I’m in a car, I’ll wear my seatbelt.

It’s as simple as that.

I don’t understand what you mean. My point is clear. If they were wearing their seatbelts, they would still be alive.

I disagree. Those people who were ejected from that Escalade have only themselves to blame for their deaths.

He just needed a sign telling him it was a stop sign to remind him.

I guess this is the thread where people demonstrate that there is very little daylight between their positions and those of the far left, with only the inanimate objects that the blame for the decisions of human actors being the difference.

The nature of impairment from marijuana is typically very different from, say, alcohol. It’s not immune from leading to traffic accidents as many overt supporters like to claim, but it is true that most stoned drivers are typically too cautious because they’re paranoid. Don’t fiddle with the stereo or otherwise get distracted though, and for sure stay off the stupid phone. “Easily distracted” while stoned is an understatement.

If they had been wearing their seatbelts then the accident wouldn’t have happened, right?

It is you who is experiencing cognitive dissonance, as that was not what he meant at all. Had they been wearing seat belts, then they wouldn't have been ejected. Thus their chances of surviving would have increased greatly. Now that is not saying that they would have absolutely survived either.

Vehicular manslaughter. What else?

And if I was the defense attorney I would argue their deaths were the result of their failure to wear a seatbelt.

In the end, A correct court decision would consider all factors regarding these deaths.

One post says those dead are solely responsible for their deaths.

The next post says that the stoned driver should be charged with manslaughter, i.e. he is responsible for the deaths.

I suggest not becoming a prosecutor.

Glad they’re finally checking this. I have family in law enforcement, and marijuana DUI’s have gone off the charts in the states where it’s legal.

If alcohol - which has a long cultural history - was a problem, I never understood why we should have legalized another substance with no cultural history in the West and in fact one that, along with its derivatives (hash), has paralyzed the Middle East and parts of Asia.
