Good way to put it, bagster. “IN LINE” is correct. Media talks about Rosenstein being PICKED by Trump, or, derisively describes these people as... “ Trump’s own selection”.

Under the AG, who is truly picked by the president, there has always been a ladder of the most experienced and senior execs, who are “eligible” for the top jobs at FBI and at Justice.

Some old crow at the department makes a recommendation from that pool of top eligibles, usually the top three get mention, and an incoming president simply takes their word for it and formalizes the arrangement.

With the exception of nominating a candidate for AG, the lessers are inside the departmental system and rise according to it.

A dangerous time for replacements, right now, given what we know.
