Yeah, and in terms of at least the Chinese market, The Last Jedi was a flop (and China’s pretty much Hollywood’s go-to market, far more than even the domestic market), and from the track record, it looks like Solo’s probably going to do even WORSE there than The Last Jedi did.
Well given that Rogue One didn’t do as well as Last Jedi. I think they need to rethink the stand alone movies, they just don’t seem to have the market the Episodes do. Which is too bad, that’s where the real creativity can be. Episodes are stuck being Star Wars movies, while the stand alones can be something else (Rogue is a WWII movie, Solo is a heist movie), it’s more fun when you can break out of the mold. That’s why Marvel movies are better than DC, they’re mostly not superhero movies while DC is stuck in the superhero rut. Or maybe it’s just the one a year thing, give it some air, one a year is a tough pace both for creators and audience.
