With AP (advanced placement) classes, they are weighted so worth more. An A in an AP class is worth more than an A in a regular class because it is harder. The student also earns college credits. So it’s possible to have higher than a 4.0 GPA
All high achievers usually are honored with magna cum laude or whatever. Not recognizing valedictorians and salutatorians mess them out of scholarships and free rides at state universities.
Many High Schools have adopted a range of 1-5 for AP or college level classes. Others often will include additional credits for extra curricular work.

I think it’s more like AP classes get an extra point or something. Plus an extra .3 for a “+”, so an A+ in an AP class would be 5.3 instead of 4.3.
And a juice box.
Difficulty should be rewarded. Back in my day, we didn’t have AP classes so a 4.0 was as high as you got. Our valedictorian was smarter than the rest of us who were taking all the upper level math and science classes. She played the system and took DE which was a work study class for half a day. IOW, if you had a job at the local Dairy Queen and showed up on time, you got a 100 all year long. The rest of us not so smart kids got 95 studying out backsides off for real classes.
Yeah, I’m still holding a grudge over that even though I was no where near the top of the class. The Spanish language requirement bombed my GPA. So did the math teacher who couldn’t have anyone make a higher grade than his special little princess so when I asked why my grade was lower than what it should have been, he got out his grade book and dropped it another point.
we can’t recognize out highest achievers. Where would that lead.
Hate the GPA plus system.
I was an honors student, but I was also in band. Band “A’s”only counted as 4. In AP and advanced classes “A’s” counted as 5.
There were other classes I took that didn’t have a possible “5”...PE, French, Typing to name a few.
Our Valedictorian and Salutatorian both took ONLY AP and Advanced classes with the exception of mandatory PE. In fact, as I remember it, both girls had absolutely straight “A’s” but the Valedictorian had gotten a medical waiver exempting her from PE. That made the difference.
In my school they had a special banquet to honor the top 5% of the class. Out of 444 in my class, I was...23rd.
Irks me to this day.
As are ACT and SAT scores

that was rare as hens teeth in 1974

Back when I was in high screwl (and we turned in our homework chiseled into REAL STONE tablets), there were certain hard classes, like Latin, where they’d add a point to the normal point value associated with your letter grade, so 3.0 for a C, 4.0 for a B and so on. So if you got an A, that class would go in as a 5, so if you had straight As otherwise, you could theoretically end up with a GPA > 4.0. The bonus classes were few enough and hard enough that I don’t recall anyone ever doing so, though.
I am sure that if I had purchased billboard space for this purpose for any of my kids they would have stopped speaking to me.

High achievers are still recognized. They wear special ribbons to indicate their rank. But there is only one FIRST place—at least in the real world.
