Theyve been enemies-turned-friends, teammates, rivals and the two most iconic faces in golf this millennium. Theyve combined for 122 PGA Tour wins and 19 majors. And now, theyre planning a live-television, winner-take-all match-play face-off.
Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are playing for $10 million.

I wish my wife would take up golf.
All I want is peace and quiet at home to play jeep and blazer mechanic. Maybe a little photography and videography to make some extra crumbs.
I get to hear about baseball to no end. However, I don’t go to games. That is a bedrock policy. I can find better things to do.
Obviously haven’t been watching golf this year. Tiger finished a strong 4th last weekend - after rimming out three putts for birdie. He’s been getting better every week.
They should each pony up $5 mil each, and winner take all. Period. All else is just another dog-and-pony show.
If Mick is on his game, Tiger doesn’t stand a chance.
Chump change, for both of them. I'm sure the event will be structured where they will both be paid handsomely from TV and other sponsorship revenues.
These are elite golfers, despite their "primeness." To anyone with an ounce of knowledge about the game, they know that to reach the levels on which Mickelson and Woods plan, it takes much more than "any kind of athletic ability."
While you're correct about playing the sport all your life (barring any back or joint issues), it takes more than "athletic ability" to actually make money.
Same with any sport.
Companies pay big bucks for advertising and sponsorship.
They know the sheep will pay to watch.
That’s PGA events...Look at all the overseas events that go on before and after the PGA Tour...
I like your answer the best.
While the spouse is spinning wheels at a baseball game this evening, I’m going to do something productive or at least enjoyable. Play all on Rockford Files season 3 sounds good.
Yes, and top golfers make a lot more than top athletes in other sports. Trouble is, there’s so few of them.
:)
I love sports, I really do - but the idol worship that it’s become makes my stomach cringe.
They promote a nihilist like Woods as “legend” and treat a genuine good person & role-model like Tebow as a pariah.
I didn’t know these two trash talk. Sad.
I agree with you.
I'm not entirely certain how you mean it, but you seem to dismiss golf as a boring sport for the non-athletic type of person. I disagree. There's a good deal of athleticism, skill, and coordination to play well at golf. It's not a sport that provides instant gratification. Perhaps there's such a draw for the amateurs because they realize how much skill is required for what the pros do, and how effortless they make it appear.
Are either one of the top 100?
I would love to see them play this match at Pine Valley.
“millenium” = 1000 years. I don’t agree they are the most iconic in the last 1000 yrs.
There is no appearance money on the PGA Tour, there is on the Euro and Asian tours. The PGA banned that practice decades ago.
Obviously havent been watching golf this year. Tiger finished a strong 4th last weekend - after rimming out three putts for birdie. Hes been getting better every week.
Eldrick played the B Team last week...and came in 4th. At least he made the cut for a change.
Yeah...That’s what I said on#48...
