I would suspect that in practice a major factor is that Europe has had better sanitation that almost all of Africa dating back almost to the Roman Republic.

Likely reasons include: The life cycle of this worm requires a certain species or genera of Snail that is not present in Europe. The Snail needs to be excreted from it’s human host into waters with snails and even semi-modern sanitation does a good job of preventing this.

It’s quite complicated and fascinating. The parasite requires ants, snail puke, livestock like sheep, goats, blades of grass, and still fresh shallow pools of water within 200 yards. Only then can it jump into hosts. Break any one component and no transmission.

No need to eat the snails, this parasite is waterborne after infecting the snail: schistosomiasis

Usually snails eat parasite eggs. The eggs hatch in the snail. Something eats or comes in contact with the snail and gets infected. Parasites have a pretty predicable lifecycle. It’s also difficult to stop in the wild.

I read about the horrors of schistosomiasis when I was in sixth grade. But it was comforting to know that it was only found in subsaharan Africa.

As Europe sinks inexorably into the dark pit of decadence, horrifying diseases of all kinds will take their toll.

Europe has been trying to commit suicide for centuries. Maybe now she'll succeed. Whether by sword wielding conquerors or killer worms, what difference does it make?

America could send her sons to die yet again to save Europe from suicide... Or she could send an army of physicians and tons of antimicrobials... But frankly, why bother? If Europe is determined to commit suicide, she'll find a way, sooner or later.

No vetting, no quarantine, no medical exams = lots of disease.

Schistosoma mansoni is an unusual parasitic trematode of humans. Unusual, because unlike most other trematodes, schistosomes are dioecious, i.e. have separate sexes and also unusual in that they are longer and more worm-like than most other flukes. Eggs are released in the host's feces and hatch into miracidia, which go on to infect freshwater snails and reproduce to form cercaria. The cercaria then seek out human hosts and penetrate their skin and make their way to the blood stream. The worms seek out a member of the opposite sex and if one is found, the pair will settle down in mesenteric blood vessels and begin to start a family. The couple is monogamous - the female actually lives within a groove in the male’s body called the gynaecophoric canal (as shown in photo) and there she will churn out more than 300 eggs a day. S. mansoni is a major public health threat in parts of Africa, Asia, and South America where is causes a chronic disease known as either schistosomiasis or bilharzia.
