Sean Connery was the best. Craig is good, but I didn't really like the "tone" of the newer bond films. Too gritty and dark, overwrought. The earlier films were intentionally zany and I think that fit better.

If they're going to stick with the newer formula Elba is probably a good choice. I'd prefer they return to the old formula, in which case the tall skinny guy who played Loki in the super hero movies would be better.

The Bond of the novels is gritty and dark. Overwrought? Not so much.

I've read the novels several times each. Craig's dark and gritty tone matches the novels.

Funny enough, when I read the action scenes or the cold-blooded killing scenes in the books, Craig's Bond is who I see. But I see Connery's Bond when he's interacting with women. Connery was just more in line with that part of Bond. Probably because Connery's Bond was from that era, and Craig's Bond has to put up with 40 years of PC nonsense.

Tom Hiddleston. He was good as the mercenary in 2017's "Kong: Skull Island". I could see him pulling off Bond, or some other secret agent role.

He was spectacular in the mini-series The Night Manager. If you haven’t seen it, buy it. It is riveting and haunting.

Actually, the novels are pretty gritty. I always read Bond’s character as a thug. Daniel Craig’s portrayals have all been very thuggish. He’s has become my favorite Bond.

That said, if there’s gotta be a SJW treatment for Bond, Idris Elba is a great choice. Superb actor. I suspect he would make a fine thug of a spy.
