Well you pull out your Ruger Blackhawk in .44 magnum and shoot the bear. Never leave home without it!

A black bear, unless it is a sow with cubs —and you get between her and her cubs — is much less dangerous than a grizzly bear. Usually you wouldn’t even know it was there, as it would try to avoid humans. It is when they become used to humans, often by feeding out of human garbage, that black bears become dangerous.
Haha, I heard you don’t need a 44-magnum. You only need a .22 cal mouse gun... To shoot your running partner so you could get away.
Stupid hikers probably had energy bars in their pockets.

The bear was partly scared as evidenced by climbing the trees, but it acted like it was expecting a handout of some food from the runners. The runners were smart to not actually try and out run the bear. It might have provoked a chase response.
Anybody moving in bear country should be armed and know how to use their weapon of choice.

What did they expect roaming around in the bears’ backyard?

That bear was close and slow enough to pop with a .22 revolver or semi-auto.
