I just think force is very tricky in such a context.

I hope you understand that I mean "force" in the context of which the question was asked. As in "memes", propaganda, rhetoric, etc.

Sort of a "when they go low, we go lower" kinda deal. Always staying one level of force above them, and no more. Finally ending up with the amount of "force" necessary to gain compliance and stop resistance. It should be noted that physical force is on the continuum, all force being reasonable and necessary at all times.

It's the thinking man's use of force, taking into everything and then some of those things you mentioned.

The time for playing nice-nice, Marquis of Queensbury rules is over. That's a loser's game.

I erred and misspoke.

There are times when you may escalate force more than one level above in order to gain compliance and overcome resistance.. I forget my training.
