W-h-a-t a delicate operation. It hardly sounds possible. But I guess the training for the researchers is pretty tough. Separating one’s ego from the job at hand and learning to compartmentalize must be the way to go.

Good folks to lead such, imho, are not that easy to find in a lot of circles. I don't know about the military on that score but I suspect they are above average as a group of candidates. Setting one's own biases aside is particularly difficult to impossible for arrogant, stubborn types who believe their own press reports. They tend to think they have an accurate corner on reality.
