There is a link out there to the loss and recovery of that Tomcat (Very interesting read: LINK: "TOMCAT DEEP!".
That Tomcat was carrying a Phoenix missile which was state of the art at the time, which explains the effort to find it, given that there was a Soviet warship that saw it happen and was able to pinpoint the area.
If we hadn't looked for it, they certainly would have...because if we had been them, WE would have!
