UK rail lines blocked by unexpected Windows dialog box (MS-Office uninstall nukes display)

It looks like you're trying to run a rail service. Do you want some help with that?

Window admins rejoice! It isn’t just you that can’t get Office 2010 to uninstall silently. The mighty brains behind the UK railways have had just as much trouble.

As well as the usual passenger information boards, detailing the day's cancellations and delays, London’s Victoria train station also features displays on every platform showing the state of the lines around the building.

Station staff, taking a break from stopping passengers boarding trains due to inexplicable ticket restrictions, can use the screens to get a handle on what is happening outside the terminus.

Except when an Office 365 upgrade is being deployed.

Yup. Right about now would be perfect. I wasn't looking at that LIVE TRAIN SIGNALLING INFORMATION... #fail #silentuninstall pic.twitter.com/xgiFlsvizV — Rob Dyke (@robdykedotcom) November 2, 2018

Twitter user Rob D noted all the screens last week were requesting permission to go ahead and remove Microsoft Office 2010 with a dialog box obscuring some minor information like, er, the lines from platforms 13 to 19. Regular users of Victoria will know that those serve trains heading to, among others, Gatwick Airport.

Why a copy of Office is needed on a PC tasked with showing line information is anyone’s guess (and two Internet Explorer icons indicates there is double the fun to be had). We asked the UK’s rail operator, Network Rail, if they were having some IT difficulties but have, alas, yet to receive a response.

Rail users who enjoyed spending an expected early morning hour on station platforms earlier this week due to overrunning engineering works can take comfort that perhaps it wasn’t simply down to bad time management. Maybe no one had managed to click "OK" to get Excel to install. ®

WAAD - Windows As A Disservice

WIAAD - Windows Is Always A Disservice

Can't stand how utterly primitive Windows is some times.

The company I am at fell for Microsoft Office 365 siren song.
Smooth transition, no one will notice a thing as you upgrade the Microsoft sales guy probably said.

We have had thousand and one calls for a simple mistake on someones part that used the wrong domain name and used a username instead of the email address required. Example @microsoft.com was instead another name like @apple.com
Also not everyone has been upgraded at once due to the number of users so if John Smith who has been upgraded wants to email someone who is on the old server they will not see that person’s email address in the address book. They have to manually type out the address. Also a delay from Microsoft getting licenses.

Also Onedrive deletes the users files. Leaves just the filename and icon and the size is 0kb. Issue going back years so will never be fixed. Imagine your critical files being deleted. Search on: onedrive files show 0kb

Example here:
Onedrive corrupting my files to 0kb
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/onedrive-corrupting-my-files-to-0kb-redux/4f0677d7-dfdd-4abe-a590-4143c1d590b5

Of course there is the issue of the Windows 10 update that also has been deleting user files.

My main pc at home uses Windows 7 and I am not updating anytime soon to 10.

LOL

Game started without us - North Korea, Iran, China, Russia have been building and stockpiling nukes and materials for years.

But now that President Trump has warned them all that we are joining the game, they might switch to a conventional game like “Risk”.

Uh oh, seems they forget that we have won that game twice and are more than ready to complete the ‘Hat Trick”.
