It's a good write up on how to switch to a Unix solution and avoid all the problems with Windows, yet keeping things looking a lot like windows. It's a great read.

You can read the rest here; https://blog.simon-frey.eu/how-switching-my-parents-over-to-linux-saved-me-a-lot-of-headache-and-support

Enjoyed the article. My son switched us over to linux mint a couple of years ago.

I do have one question that perhaps someone could help me with: about three weeks ago, Chrome went down and will not come back up--loads for one or two seconds than goes away.

The kicker? My wife's account also has Chrome. Her's is working perfectly: loads, stays, does what Chrome's supposed to do.

Any idea how I, a non-tech savvy guy, can fix it? I've tried to read up on the forums about what might be wrong and what I can do to fix it, but those things are just beyond me.

Any ideas, folks? Thanks.

I work in DevOps and a bit of tech support. Design databases, implement mail servers, etc.

If any friends or family ask me to work on their computer, I mess it up intentionally (nothing destructive) so that they’ll never ask me again. That policy has saved me lots of heartache over the years.

As someone who has worked on Unix systems since 1985, the last thing I would do is inflict Linux on friends and family.

Desktop Linux is a failure. Too many distributions & too many ways of doing things for the average schlub.

MacOS is the only Unix distribution that’s sugar-coated enough for the average schlub to easily use. If friends & family have an iPhone, the integration between Mac & iPhone is a win for those folks.

For the Windows 10 holdouts, buying an adequately configured PC for their use causes a lot of complaints to disappear.

After reading this, I went and tried LibreOffice. It’s impressive! Have you got a link to how to transition an Access DB to Base? The ones I found all seemed to assume too much down-in-the-weeds knowledge. If I can find how to do that, I will switch and let my Office sub expire!
