I took my family on the Silverton-Durango steam train; it has bench seats, three people per seat. Our teenage daughter ended up on the bench with a pair of very wide (and grouchy) people, and did not have a seat. The rest of us had to take turns standing. The train was sold-out so our choice was standing or leaving one of us behind - not one of the fatties because that would have been illegal.
Oh, and now everyone flies with a “service dog” or “comfort animal”. The FAA should issue a *one animal per cabin* flight rule and all other animals are moved to cargo until this nonsense is stopped. We aren’t all thrilled to sit next to your snake, rat, spider or whatever.
There is a solution...when purchasing a ticket the airline should ask weight then the system can decide to either charge for an extra seat, deny selling a ticket, or decide where the big folks can sit. It makes sense to seat a couple flying together who weight 350 each would be assigned a center and window seat only, leaving the aisle seat for a normal sized person.
They don't serve meals on Southwest just drinks and snacks... so I assume the critic was referring to another airline.
When we are flying on airlines... my wife and I are just trying to get from point A to point B as quickly and with as little expense as possible. I really couldn't care less if there is a meal, but it is annoying that you can no longer bring your own containers of soda or water through security. But it just adds a few dollars to buy something at the terminal which is likely the real reason for this inconvenience. Actually the worthless security games they play are much more annoying to me these days than the comfort of the airplane.
The seats have gotten a little narrower and closer together since the 1990s, but that just takes them back to where they were in decades before that. The bigger factor is that people have gotten much larger on average and these days computerized booking makes it much more likely that the planes will be full, often completely full. In the 1990s and before, I can remember often flying on planes that were less than half full... but I cannot even remember being on a flight like that in recent years
No, the guy was a food critic in general. This was some restaurant, not an airline. And it’s probably a joke, anyway.
We normally just find the cheapest possible deal, but there are often good deals to be found in 1st Class if that is something that is important to you. The thought of paying 5 or more times as much for a full price 1st Class ticket seems incredibly wasteful to me however. Other than my one bad experience between two nasty fatties, I typically enjoy the company of other people. When we were flying standby a lot, my wife and I typically did not even get to sit next to one another often not even near one another.
OK, I got it... I thought that it was actually a review of an airline.
Sometimes it takes me awhile... “The food was terrible and the servings were too small.” LOL

So what happened was they didn’t fill the seat next to mine, and the stewardess came and sat next to me when she wasn’t serving food and drinks, which by the way, I got served everything first.
Best first class ever.
:)
Never fly coach. And if you're on a flight from Vegas to Newark, chances are you think a little too highly of yourself to go to Atlantic City to gamble, so maybe fat people are not the full extent of your problems.
I recently rode Amtrak — pleasantly surprised. Exceedingly slow yes. But time passed much more pleasantly than airline cattle car sufferings.
Would definitely do it again. I avoid air travel and have not done so for years. My RV or Amtrak—no air travel again (I hope).
Should have paid the extra $100 so she could pick a seat or just drove.
Not so. If when she had booked, she could have paid the extra amount and picked an isle seat, or bumped up to business class. One of the many reasons I don’t fly any more.
I have an uncle who has been 400+ pounds for the last 30 years. He doesn't even try to fly anymore. Obesity is a problem especially in the women on my mom's side of the family. The only one who ever took the weight off and kept it off long term is a cousin who had Laparoscopic Gastric Banding (lap band) surgery. I used to think that was a crazy thing, but after her example, I believe that for some it is the best example.
One thing that does not make any sense to me at all is that this flight was supposedly going from Vegas back to Newark, yet everyone including the fat people were wearing their heavy coats. All of the fat people in my family are hot all the time.
Even on the flight where I was squeezed between two super fat people in the middle of the December from Chicago to Seattle, none of us were wearing coats or even heavy clothing and we were still sweating all over each other.
The real tragedy in air travel these days is not the size of the seats you sit in, but the size of the seats on the flight attendants. I remember being gaga eyed every time I went on a flight as young single man. My goodness, the stewardesses were so good looking that it was almost painful. What happened?
