What makes a great movie? *snip* We all know that it takes the combination of a good script, good acting, and good directing to make a film worth watching. Actually my favourite moment in “The Natural” was the first home run Hobbs hits as a New York Knight (when he knocks the cover off the ball as per the legendary Wilford Brimley’s instructions).

I think the Dead Cat question from the Terminator is a classic, especially selecting the responses:

yes
No

I have 3.

1. Quint's USS Indianapolis speech in Jaws. Original draft written by the great John Milius and then shortened for the better by Robert Shaw.

2. Otter's speech to the Student Council in Animal House. "I, for one, am not going to stand here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America!"

3. "Men of Harlech" scene from Zulu.

OK, I'm sure many of the following aren't up to great cinematic standards, but they are fun and stick in my mind as memorable moments.

How about "The Bourne Supremacy" when Jason says: "She's standing right next to you."

2001: "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that."

I know it's juvenile but the Reggie scene from "Bad Boys II" makes me wish I had a daughter just to mess with her dates like that.

SSgt Nantz in "Battle Los Angeles" his speech that ends with "...and you remind me of him."

Dr. Strangelove - "Hey, what about Major Kong?"

Evolution - "Yeah, I seen that movie. The black dude dies first."

Clue - "Let us in, let us in! ... Let us out, let us out!"

Galaxy Quest - "Oh, that's not right!" or earlier "That was a hell of a thing..."

It occurs to me this list is probably a disconcerting peek into my psyche and twisted sense of humor.

Heck, you could make a whole list JUST from the original Godfather movie.

I will have the standout scene being the restaurant scene, as a first time viewer won’t really know how it is going to turn out. (contrast with any superhero or James Bond movie).

For other movies, in “All About Eve”, the scene in the hotel room where George Sanders’ Addison demolishes Eve’s edifice in 90 second of dialogue is exceptional.

Also, in “The Third Man”, when Holly is in the surreal, nearly abandoned streets in post-war late night Vienna, and hers a woman yelling in German, and a cat getting away. The light turns on, revealing “The Third Man” hiding in a doorway in the alley.

The poker game in “The Sting” is very well acted.

A funny story about the Marseillaise scene in Casablanca.

They originally wanted Strasser and his men to be singing the Nazi Horst Wessel anthem - but it was protected under an international copyright arrangement.

So the producers substituted the early 19th Century Die Wacht am Rhein instead.

By the time Casablanca premiered, the 8th Air Force was pounding the Reich copyright office to dust.

Timing is everything.
