Back in the early 1900s feathers were high fashion- used on people’s hats and other clothing items. Exported. Sold everywhere in vast quantities- because they were “free” to anyone who hunted for them. Some has even used complete taxidermied songbirds, flickers, woodpckers, etc. Collecting txidermied birds, displayed under glass bells, was also in fashion.
The most prized feathers were from birds in breeding plumage, so most of the killing not only destroyed the adults but also all the offspring they would have produced. The long breeding plumage of herons was in big demand.
The senseless slaughter drove many birds to the brink. Pink spoonbills, Great White Egrets, Snowy egrets, Blue Herons, gallinules, rails, colorful Carolina parakeets, buntings.
Birds such as cardinals were captured for the pet trade.

The law was in reaction to that, and it worked. The problem is that once the fashion of the time ended, the law didn’t lapse but lingered. And any effort to remove now common and thriving species from it is doomed because special interest groups will smear anyone suggesting a removal.

“The lore in our goose infested area is that if you come across a nest, destroy all of the eggs, but one.“

Don’t get caught doing that without a permit. Each egg would be a separate count. And the right way to do it is shake all the eggs vigorously then replace them in the nest. The geese will try to hatch them but also not lay anymore.

Once again, make sure you have ALL the legally required permits or you could find yourself in serious legal jeopardy.

Best,

L

You mean they passed a law to protect their babies?

Wow. I have a friend who has a floral display in her entry that consists of several hundred pheasant feathers. She needs to be careful who she allows in the house, I guess.

The police were definitely mentally handicapped. Those stupid birds need to be declared a nuisance, just like rats. They should helped the kid get replacements for his eggs.

The guy who reported the incident should be keel-hauled on the Nimitz.

Canadians don’t want to play for Canadian teams. The taxes are higher, and also the fans in Canada are pretty tough on players if they don’t produce.

Nobody in Dallas gets upset if the Stars aren’t playing well, although of course, they enjoy it when they win.
