Russia launched the world’s longest submarine today, the special mission submarine Belgorod. Designed to support a variety of military missions, including the Poseidon long-range strategic nuclear torpedo, the sub is far larger than anything operated by any other naval force, including the U.S. Navy. The six hundred foot long submarine displaces more water than a World War I battleship and can dive to a depth of 1,700 feet.

Belgorod is a modified Oscar II design. Belgorod is 604 ft long compared to 560 ft of the Ohio class SSBN. The 30,000 displacement is comparable to the Iron Duke dreadnaught from WW I.

can dive to a depth of 1,700 feet.

It can dive as deep as the ocean bed.
But it can only do it once.

That Poseidon torpedo that has a range of “thousands of miles” and a top speed of 60 knots is pretty impressive and this sub carries six of them. Oh, and each has a payload of two mega-tons of nuke excitement. Let’s see..where will the first one go?

My immediate reaction on reading that dive depth was “and I darn sure don’t want to be on board!”

Aw any submarine can do that. Any surface vessel for that matter.

payload of two mega-tons of nuke excitement.

Then I wish it well...we don't need all that poisonous nuclear waste drifting around the ocean wrecking the fishing industry.

No doubt this sub will have trailing company as it heads to sea. And with all it’s impressive characteristics, it makes me think back to how Russians always produce the best of everything, all you have to do is listen to their claims.
