Assault charges dropped against 10-year-old boy in dodgeball case

DETROIT (CBS NEWS) — Prosecutors have dismissed charges against a 10-year-old Michigan boy accused of assaulting another student by throwing a ball at his head during a schoolyard dodgeball game.

While the boy no longer faces criminal charges, “the mother of the alleged victim had every right to go to the authorities and the authorities had an obligation to investigate,” Maria Miller, assistant prosecuting attorney at the Wayne County Prosecutor’s office, said in a press release.

Miller’s press release also points out, “When this case was reviewed by my office, no one paid attention the race of either party.” In some reports about the case, critics suggested the charges were racially motivated because the 10-year-old is black and the boy he hit is white.

“It is categorically wrong to suggest that this was charged based on race or geography,” Miller wrote.

Miller’s statement clarified that the 10-year-old was never arrested and that she did not make her decision based on public outcry. She also pointed out there are other options for a juvenile rather than being prosecuted, and expressed hope that both families involved can work out a solution for the children.

There is a subset of people in our society that has a level of savagery that a lot of people do not recognize. That savagery manifests itself in activities that were once considered relatively civil, but somewhat violent, such as dodge ball. When I was a kid we played dodge ball all the time. No one ever got hurt despite some players getting a little carried away. We would have never actually tried to seriously hurt someone. That is not the case with this subset of people. If anyone does not believe this do a little search on youtube. The average white kid cannot meet this subset on the subset’s level. They simply cannot.

What were they using ... basketballs?!

That's what we used to use in the 50s....the leather ones with the raised seams.

This article has the facts wrong.

Pause this video at 0:17. You’ll see the police report: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vuJpmIG5LM

They were not playing dodgeball. They were playing “tips.”

In “tips,” the ball is tossed in the air (not thrown at anyone), as per the report.

Also, the report gives more details about the incident: The 10yo boy is alleged to have thrown the ball directly at the other boy when he wasn’t looking, and he’s alleged to have said, “That’s what [?] gets.”

The 10yo boy is just a kid. Sometimes kids bully each other.

The adults are supposed to step in. If the school had handled the situation, the mother probably wouldn’t have contacted the police.

FWIW, my boys’ favorite gym class game was dodgeball. So, I’m not a critic of dodgeball.

Again, this wasn’t a dodgeball game. This was a bullying incident.

And, P.S., it doesn’t matter what skin color the boys had.

I got hit in the head so many times playing dodge ball. I'd have to go find my glasses before I went out. Sometimes I needed new glasses.

I loved dodge ball.

One time a substitute gym teacher had us play "El Lumpo". It's dodgeball with no teams and no outs. You very quickly find out who is not popular because they are laying on the floor in a fetal position while getting pummeled with balls. It was funny watching balls bounce off the victim and land back in the hands of the thrower for another shot.

These kids just don’t know how to play.

If your opponent is throwing from a distance sufficient to provide you time to dodge or catch the ball, you face them and do your best.

If they are 10 feet away from you, you turn your back and hope they miss.

This isn’t rocket science.

There’s no crying in dodge-ball.

Back in the day we played “animal ball”. The last 10 guys in the game were allowed to chase each other down and cram the ball down each others’ throats.

I had good hands and could catch, so I often survived until the last 10. Being extremely slow, I never lasted long after that.

Thanks. This incident is more complicated than I had initially thought.
