Well, that eliminates the bogus “erotic asphixiation” rumor going around yesterday.
There are different types of choke holds.
Some work against the carotid artery, and some work against the windpipe/Adam’s apple.
These type of choke holds don’t rely on the presence of a gi or any type of shirt or other garment as a ligature, they’re done by application of certain hand and arm techniques to bring the inner part of the forearm to bear, leveraged against the person’s throat.
Have the different facial profiles been discounted now?

Well, this complicates things. I wouldn’t expect a broken hyoid with a strangulation hanging (versus a drop hanging). First thought is maybe the murder theory was the right call and someone strangled him, except for one thing. “Multiple broken bones” implies there were broken vertebrae since those are the only other bones in the area. I’m no expert but I doubt vertebrae typically get broken when someone strangles someone to death. The hyoid breaks but not the vertebrae, I suspect. What does break vertebrae is drop hanging. So assuming the coroner was being precise and really did mean multiple broken bones and not just a broken hyoid bone plus some crumpled up throat cartilage, then it sounds like Epstein managed to get some drop. Not sure how he would’ve done that though. Maybe short rope off the top bunk with knees pulled up to chest or something.
John C. Woods, the U.S. Army Master Sergeant that lied his way into becoming the executioner of the Nuremberg defendants, did this. Although other people claim he intentionally moved the coils so that Julius Streicher would strangulate to death instead of the drop snapping his neck immediately.

Absolutely accurate. A hanging done by a professional executioner will kill the subject nearly instantly by breaking the neck so violently above v1 that the brain stem ruptures.
An amateur hanging, without a forceful enough drop AND proper placement of the ligature will result in a slower strangulation type of demise. Bad way to go, IMHO.
It should not. The ‘choke hold’, if done properly, restricts the blood flow to the brain brain by compressing the sides of the neck to restrict Carotid artery flow into the brain. After about 10-15 seconds, the subject should pass out from oxygen starvation in the brain, but the airway itself and the hyroid bone should be unaffected.
With the move Sean Connery used in THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER the guy was dead in 5 seconds.
