I must take issue with the notion that the Civil War was an effort to overthrow the US government. It was an effort of several states to secede from the union.

No. It was a rejection by southern states of the government of the United States. That’s why they called their new country the Confederate States of America.

The author is exactly right.

Close. It was actually a successful attempt to force said States back into the union.
