As a boy, my youngest brother was badly bitten by an injured squirrel. Despite prompt emergency treatment, his hand swelled up and he was out of school for a week. Fortunately, we caught the squirrel and it was determined to not be rabid, thereby sparing my brother the misery of a series of rabies shots in the stomach.
The article does not mention rabies as a concern for those attacked by the squirrel. This may be due to the lack of wild animal rabies cases reported in the Houston area.
