I don’t recall any instances of using real time camera feeds and audible signals to batters back in the era of Babe or Mantle. This is completely different.

Well as old as baseball anyway.

Man on second, reading the catcher’s signs and tipping off the batter; perfectly fine. Everyone one knows this, and they change the signs accordingly. Batter tries to peek at the catcher and there’ll be some chin music.

Hidden camera in center field, electronic relay, guy pounding on a trash can, not so much.

Don’t know what the punishment should be, don’t know how it effected the outcome of games, but everyone involved knew it was cheating. The Astros’ achievements have been tarnished.
