Coronavirus Precautions: International Travelers Arriving At NYC Airports Concerned By Lack Of Screenings

New York State Department Issues Travel Advisories In Response To Outbreak

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — With the coronavirus outbreak affecting at least 40 countries, many travelers are concerned about what’s being done to contain the virus.

At JFK Airport, jetlagged passengers typically in a rush to clear immigration are now appalled by a lack of screening, especially compared to procedures in the countries they just left.

Emily Ferrara and Blair Haworth just returned from Florence, Italy, where their study abroad program was canceled because of the virus. There are more than 300 cases there, one of the largest outbreaks outside China.

Yet, the students told CBS2’s Christina Fan they weren’t asked a single question about potential symptoms once they landed in New York City.

“We didn’t even get checked. Like we’re used to being in Florence where you get your temperature checked. Here they didn’t do anything, which is kind of crazy,” Ferrara said. “Considering, like, how much the cases have spread so fast, like, they should definitely be taking more precautions here.”

Currently, the United States is only conducting health screenings for passengers who are flying in from China.

Some, including Mayor Bill de Blasio this week, called for the screenings to be extended to flights from Italy, South Korea and Japan.

But Dr. Teresa Amato, the chair of emergency medicine at Long Island Jewish Forest Hills, says the idea may not be effective.

“I think it’s becoming increasingly difficult given that people are infected with no symptoms and travel areas are becoming more and more widespread with the virus,” she said.

In addition to airport screenings, some passengers believe there should be more travel restrictions from countries other than China. President Donald Trump weighed in on the idea at a press conference Wednesday.

“At a right time, we might do that. Right now, it’s not the right time,” he said.

This is a perfect example of WHY Trump needed to conduct MASS FIRINGS of Fed bureaucrats commencing on 1/21/2017.

The Presidency is an executive job. You can’t be that hands-on, you have to delegate. And if you are delegating to people who hate your guts and are trying to undermine you you’re courting disaster. You need your own people that you can rely on.

Biggest mistake of his Presidency was the botched transition IMHO.

Incompetence.

They should be screening anyone who is from or visited any of the countries with more than 100 cases.

They should asking all passengers of all flights if they have any symptoms. And to report any symptoms over the next 14 days.

They should follow up with anyone who has symptoms. And if they have the virus, they should contact everyone on the flight.

“Border Controls work”. I don’t disagree but they aren’t 100%. The Italian patient zero was never in China, and had no contact with anyone from China. Italy’s lack of control didn’t cause his infection. There must be other ways it spreads and that is what wc causing the panic we see.

Also regular flu has killed 10,000 here in the US this flu season, which is just half over (September-May). That includes 54 children, No one is focused on the relative mortality of the two.

Closing borders with few cases and no fatalities seems excessive, as it would cause economic collapse world-wide.

They aren’t going to be able to detain this virus- (Or any virus for that matter that comes along)- too many things going wrong like this- and people will NOT voluntarily quarantine themselves because they can’t- they need to keep making a living and can’t afford to take time off- so if they are sick ,they will simply keep their mouths shut about it- and work as long as they can- exposing many many people to the virus- who will then expose their friends to the virus and so on-

States are only calling on people who have come back from china to ‘self quarantine themselves’ and you know they will not do so- kids will go to school sick- exposing everyone to the virus- people will go out shopping, walking the streets in big cities- etc-

We can cut down somewhat the exposures, but it will escape into the general public at some point

However, Israel has a vaccine they say could be ready in 90 days as they are fast tracking approval of it-

We’ll see-

[[Currently, the United States is only conducting health screenings for passengers who are flying in from China.]]

And many states are only requiring voluntary isolation- there are 1000’s of people in cities all across the country who have traveled to china who are not under isolation, and are just being asked to voluntarily isolate themselves if they feel sick— and when people get off a plane, they could be in the very beginning of the virus, and not show any symptoms at all- then days later, while at home, or at work, they begin coughing, hacking, throwing up etc-

They may do it- probably do- but i don’t think they are quarantining anyone- just asking that they voluntarily do so- OR, they are only suggesting voluntary if he people get sick later- I’m not sure what the actual issue there is- but i know they asking folks ot voluntarily isolate themselves- probably IF they get sick later, after their initial screening when they get off flights most likely-

Legally the airline may be covered, but if they believe you will make a big PR stink they will cave.

All you have to find the names and addresses of the members of the Board of Directors and the top executives, and then pick several major media presidents of your choice.

Send them all a snail mail letter. Accuse them of risking a pandemic with their policy—and demand a refund. (Another trick, use large fonts—not caps, just large fonts—to convince them you are a little weird.)

If you are nasty enough and they think you are crazy enough, you win!

(I have tried this before—and it works.)

This disease is Trump’s biggest test. So far, his performance has not been encouraging.
There is no excuse for not screening arrivals from Italy.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
