Coronavirus Precautions: International Travelers Arriving At NYC Airports Concerned By Lack Of Screenings

New York State Department Issues Travel Advisories In Response To Outbreak

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — With the coronavirus outbreak affecting at least 40 countries, many travelers are concerned about what’s being done to contain the virus.

At JFK Airport, jetlagged passengers typically in a rush to clear immigration are now appalled by a lack of screening, especially compared to procedures in the countries they just left.

Emily Ferrara and Blair Haworth just returned from Florence, Italy, where their study abroad program was canceled because of the virus. There are more than 300 cases there, one of the largest outbreaks outside China.

Yet, the students told CBS2’s Christina Fan they weren’t asked a single question about potential symptoms once they landed in New York City.

“We didn’t even get checked. Like we’re used to being in Florence where you get your temperature checked. Here they didn’t do anything, which is kind of crazy,” Ferrara said. “Considering, like, how much the cases have spread so fast, like, they should definitely be taking more precautions here.”

Currently, the United States is only conducting health screenings for passengers who are flying in from China.

Some, including Mayor Bill de Blasio this week, called for the screenings to be extended to flights from Italy, South Korea and Japan.

But Dr. Teresa Amato, the chair of emergency medicine at Long Island Jewish Forest Hills, says the idea may not be effective.

“I think it’s becoming increasingly difficult given that people are infected with no symptoms and travel areas are becoming more and more widespread with the virus,” she said.

In addition to airport screenings, some passengers believe there should be more travel restrictions from countries other than China. President Donald Trump weighed in on the idea at a press conference Wednesday.

“At a right time, we might do that. Right now, it’s not the right time,” he said.

They fly back and forth for 8 days straight before getting so much as a mechanical check ( unless, of course, the pilots report a problem). The flight attendants pick up the garbage and clean up messes that happen in flight .

the passengers are screened prior to boarding. During flight FAA regs require stews to report any passenger displaying illness. So it seems like the US is relying on point of origin screening re: US Citizens?

As soon as anyone started screening on a large-scale basis, the ACLU, the NAACP, the SCLC, CAIR, JDL, La Raza and every civil rights group under the sun would complain about harassment, racism, HIPPA violations, and aim their criticism solely at Donald Trump as if he's to blame.

It's a really good thing we have an adult in the White House.

It’s impossible to contain it without totally shutting the borders. And even then it’s too late for that.

Yah it's a given that it's here. I suspect now that the administration has set up a front that they'll allow new cases to leak out now.

There is no way to fully control a virus from spreading. We cannot hermetically seal ourselves off. We can mitigate but we cannot fully insulate. Many carriers are asymptomatic while they shed the virus. How do you fight that? For this reason, I’m sure it’s here in greater numbers than are being reported, as it is an issue with accurate testing/monitoring, and asymptomatic carriers have no reason to be tested and quarantined. Fact is, flu is far deadlier, and we have an (often ineffective) vaccine for the flu given every year to those who are willing to receive it. But people will freak out about coronavirus and the panic will hurt the economy in the short term. Eventually, coronavirus will be a regular seasonal issue, which we will be vaccinated against. Maybe next year at the earliest. We will learn to accept it and live with it — the economy will revert to its fundamentals.

It appears the flu is “far deadlier” only insofar as it has had a chance to infect and kill more so far.

COVID-19 at least now looks like it will end up with far more infections and deaths. Of course, let’s hope that is incorrect.

What concerns me is it seems the damn thing can reoccur. That may indicate there is no immunization against it. I read here the disease seems to have an HIV strain spliced in. Whether that was natural or by design will determine whether it was an accident or design in some commie lab. Either way, if reoccurance is corrent, how does one immunize against that with the implication it may not be stopped proactively. Perhaps with the advent of summer we will get a respite and some time to continue to evaluate it further. If heat and sunlight are the only cures, I am buying shares in a nudist camp!

Ha ha. I woukdn’t want to go sitting on any furniture at such a camp!

The early experience in Singapore suggest heat might not stop it.
