The only reason that flu has killed more people than CV, is that more people have caught the flu than CV. CV is new, but it’s thought to be every bit as contagious as the flu, maybe more.

So if it’s allowed to spread to the point where as many people catch CV as the flu, then you’ll see that it’s worse.

I for one am hoping that we implement policies and actions to stop it from spreading. I don’t want to be proven right.

Is it safe to say that the primary way it spreads is via virus shedded when sneezing or coughing?

If so, I just wonder if telling people who do that to GO HOME is not one of the first things to do.

Thank you for your post.

I watched the President’s Press Conference today also.

Very calming and factual.

Am not fearful at all about this virus.

Handwashing is obviously mandated. Masks are not.

I want people who are sick to go home.

But as an allergy sufferer, I cough. Occasionally I’ll sneeze.

If you sent me home everytime I did, I’d have to find a work from home job.

But Tuesday I was sneezing more than normal and by Wednesday I realized I had a cold. So I stayed home after Tuesday.

I hope it was a coronavirus type cold, (not THE new Coronavirus). Wondering if that would give some immunity.

It’s not the end of the world, but it is a nasty virus, and as an intensivist you definitely know that ARDS is not a walk in the park - with a 25-45% predicted mortality rate dependent upon the severity. You may have much better numbers than this, but you also have to remember that the health care system is not monolithic, and care varies.

This virus isn’t the ‘end of the world’, but it’s a nasty virus for which we don’t have any current specific treatment other than supportive care. I agree that most likely the majority of people who test positive for this will not have a life-threatening illness. That said, enough will, such that it is better to err on the side of being overreactive rather than underestimating. I agree, however, that hype, and spreading fear and panic is counterproductive - at best.

Sorry, but this is nothing but conjecture from you guys! You guys who keep pushing this as a new pandemic, always downplay the numbers of people dying from influenza!

*2,977 people have currently died from COVID-19

*Most people recover from COVID-19

*CDC Estimates (2019-2020 Flu Season):

32,000,000-45,000,000 Flu Illnesses

14,000,000-21,000,000 Medical visits

310,000-560,000 Flu Hospitalizations

18,000-46,000. Flu Deaths

Amazing what you guys ignore to push Coronavirus!

True, I call that scaling or in other words a direct correlation with contact or transmission and the demographics and other variables that assist or remediate the nature of this virus.

As the flu season comes to an end it typically, historically provides a barrier or mitigating factor preventing a linear model of consistent contact and then the progression of the virus as happens with what I will call the Flu virus as we all know it.

If the new one has the same traits then that is to me an indicator of environmental factors that inhibit its growth into a full blown infection and therapeutic course needed to cure the patient. We hope that if this occurs where people are surviving does the body respond in the future using antibodies to prevent reinfection as well as inability to passively infect others even if they themselves exhibit nor suffer from it further.

All factors including demographics (Age, Nationality, current health issues) and more factor into a profile of risk and focus on best practice and path towards prevention going forward. Last I hope that the research looks for correlation between prior flu virus nature and discovery if this is a mutant variant or a whole new type. If it is a new one then all of the information gathered will provide a solid foundation for research and development of an appropriate and targeted vaccine to deal with it.

Again, it’s not the total death count so far, because not that many people have caught CV yet. It’s the fatality rate and hospitalization rate if you do get it.

Using the CDC estimates you just posted....
The likelihood that you get hospitalized with the flu given you had a medical visit ranges from: 1.5% to 4%.
310000/ 21000000= 1.48%
560000/ 14000000= 4.00%
Compare that to the 15%-20% in severe/critical condition with CV.

The fatality rate, if you get the flu this season ranges from: 0.04%=0.15%
18000/ 45000000= 0.04%
46000/ 32000000= 0.14%

But perhaps a closer comparison to “confirmed cases of CV would be Medical visits for the flu. The fatality rates for cases that had a medical visit ranges from: 0.09% to 0.33%.
18000/ 21000000= 0.09%
46000/ 14000000= 0.33%
Compare that with the 2% figure that is being thrown around for CV.

There is 19 caronavirus and they are discovering more all the time. Some bats in China seem to be some kind of carrier of these.

Where they describe the caronavirus as “novel carona virus” this is saying its a unique virus. Yes! It does cause the flu and acts like the flu but the difference is how fast it spreads. It took the Spanish Flu 3 years to kill millions of people. Now we have the flu in China in the morning and by evening it is in Los Angeles and in NYC the next morning.

The people on here downplaying the seriousness of what is ocurring is going to delay people getting prepared when they its nothing to worry about. BUT they will the first on my doorstep yelling for me to save them. Did we not learn anything from hurricane Katrina?

Look at how fast this spreading and thats all you need to know in making plans to isolate yourselves. I am NOT trying to be all doom and gloom but we are entering a serious event and i dont have any faith in the govt or medical practices in stopping it. It had to run its course however long that takes.

I am really upset at China for not reporting the true ### of what was going on in their country.

When i see children in foreign countries that dont even have oxygen to breathe as they lie there in a bed and suffer it does more than break my heart. For gods sake all the modern things we have come up and still people dont have enough food or medicine to live a decent life all because some one wants to make a damn dollar off of it.

I am a military veteran and i have been overseas and i have seen firsthand the terrible conditions that people live in. We have this right in this country too. These people have value too and we should help them to better yhemselves so they can live better lives.

No i am not a damn democrat either. God put me on this earth and all of us should care for others he put here too

I think every high school senior should be required to travel abroad during their final year of school. Then they would or might gain a better appreciation of what we have here in America. But alas, all i see is spoiled little bastards that will soon experience a way different style than what they have had in the past. I grew up in the best time to be American. Free from terrorist, spying govt, communism, perversion(sure it was always there but now its center stage) clean wholesome food from our gardens. Now that was shipped in from 3,000 to 10,000 miles away.

The global elite want to take us down. We are the last beacon in the hill. When we are gone the whole world will collapse into a pile of ruble.

My only hope is that some of what we stood for and what did remains in the history books to serve as a blueprint to those rising out of iur ashes to follow as they rebuild this earth.

“The real danger to our country is not Covid-19 itself....it’s the fear, panic and hysteria that will be the problem. Specifically, to our financial markets and the economy as a whole.”

Dead on. (pun intended)

And you folks are following the Fake News narrative and trying your best to make this sound like a pandemic! You guys can never seem to actually deal with the fact that influenza is killing vastly more people!

You use conjecture, speculation and outright psychobabble to try and justify your abject hysteria! And, just like Libs who encounter justified skepticism, you guys double down on your hysteria and doom and gloom! You guys should take a step back and observe your endless threads on this topic! It’s like Dems warning us about Globull Warming!
