Major cities in China are now much like major cities here. Air conditioning is widespread. Many apartments in Wuhan look just like apartments in Los Angeles or New York, down to the stainless steel appliances.
Wuhan gets very hot and humid, so when it gets hot more people are likely to stay inside.
What about western sanitation?

They people who think China hasn’t changed in the past 50 years have NEVER visited there. I’d put up just about any major city of theirs against any major city of ours, any day.
