That storm already had a 50+mile history of continuous hail production, so I expected it -- but not for the continuous thunder, tornado roar, wind in the trees, heavy rain noise, etc., to mask it.

Looks like Autumn on our place -- except all the "fallen" leaves are green... '-)

This morning, my daughter actually found some "hail craters" in the yard...

I made a similar error when I was a kid. I lived in a quiet neighborhood, so I figured I would be able to hear cars coming. I avoided the first two parts of stop-look-listen, and an alert driver swerved around me, saving my life. I had mentally failed to correct for the sound of the lawn mower working near by.
