Hip and knee operations should be done under local anesthetic to help cut carbon emissions
The Telegraph via Yahoo ^ | 6/17/2020 | Emma Gatten

Using local instead of general anaesthetic for hip, knee and other operations could help cut greenhouse gas emissions, according to a new study.

Drugs used for general anaesthetics contain greenhouse gases such as nitrous oxide, which can stay in the atmosphere for up to 114 years and contribute to global warming.

Switching the one million annual hip and knee replacement operations in the United States to local anaesthetic would save the equivalent of 7.3 million miles driven in a car, according to the study, which was based on a one-year experiment at a hospital in New York and published in the journal Regional Anesthesia & Pain Medicine.

Surgeons at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York carried out 96 per cent of their hip and knee replacements using local anaesthesia in 2019, and estimated they saved the equivalent of 60,500 car miles.

That compared to an average of 75 per cent normally done under general anesthesia.

Although the greenhouse gases used in anaesthesia last just a fraction of the time in the atmosphere compared to carbon dioxide, some are thousands of times more potent, and scientists say reducing the impact on the environment in the near future is crucial.

Anaesthetic gases account for between 50-60 per cent of the carbon footprint of an operating theatre in the US as less than 5 per cent of the gases are inhaled by the patient, leaving the rest to enter the atmosphere.

The study also highlighted that local anaesthetic is often preferable in terms of giving patients a shorter hospital stay, more effective pain relief and fewer side effects, although its authors acknowledged it is not always suitable.

I am all for havig an option to do operations with locals if they can do it safely and the patient is okay with it, being awake to hear all that goong on, some may be fine others not.

But to mandate it for such a stupid reason, you can’t capitulate to libtard idiots.

How can Nitrous Oxide get into the atmosphere if it’s in my lungs and blood system?

regional anesthesia can be just as dangerous if not more. Let’s let the anesthesiologist pick the anesthetic not the global warming morons

Let this A-hole have a knee or hip replaced under local and then see how feels about it. I sure as hell am happy I was completely out when they replaced my knee I didn’t want to hear the sawing and hammering let alone maybe seeing my toes as my lower leg is folded up towards my head. And then there is always the issue of hearing everything the surgeon and team are saying..........like “Oh shit”. And hip replacements are are much more violent as the hip joint is dislocated to do the repair.

I’ve had both replaced and there is no way in hell they are going to do either procedure to me without knocking my ass out.
I every refused to watch the video of them doing a replacement after observing for a few minutes. They saw chisel and pound on the bones. Screw being awake for that.

This PC BS is going a bit overboard.

“Not Satire. “

when i read the headline and first sentence, mrs. catnipman asked if it was a babylon bee article ... clearly, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to produce satire that stays ahead of leftist insanity ...

My first hip replacement was done with an epidural and a light anesthetic to put me to sleep. I woke up when the electric saw was whining and told them, “well that sure sounds interesting”. Someone must have pushed the plunger down and went to sleep again. I woke up again when they were moving my leg back and forth (I guess to check to see if the hip joint worked properly) and I asked the group around me, “hmmmm....seems like we're about done; are we almost done?” and then went back to sleep.

When it came time to do the other hip a couple years later, it was done under a full general anesthesia.....no wake ups, no problems......

I feel the same as you. Local is fine if everyone is cool with it, but for goodness sakes, not because of climate change! Good grief! So asinine!

“.nitrous oxide,”

Start by denying fags nitrous oxide for use in their perverted sex lives.

That ought to be good for billions of miles saved in driving.

Hubby had a hip replacement this morning. They gave him the choice of general anesthesia or a spinal. He took the general. He’s doing fine but he’s quite drugged.

I had 5 major hip surgeries in 11.5 months. The last one was 1 year ago. Also one knee surgery in Sept. Each surgery except the knee surgery resulted in a multi-day stay.

Between the 1st and 5 hip surgeries I had more than 20 complete hip dislocations. I would never been able to endure all that without being knocked out.

Even for the dislocations they knocked me out with the stuff that killed Michael Jackson and fentanyl.

They let my husband stay in room for some of the hip reductions. Other times he could here me scream even while he was in the waiting room.

This is inhumane.

I plan on nitrous oxicide the next time I see my dentist. I don’t care if it stays in the air for 114 years.

It’s hard to believe 96% only had local anesthesia. They’re stronger than me.

I had total hip replacement last week and begged for a spinal, epidural, local, but they did general anyhow. I give a shit about carbon whatevers; I just hate coming out of general.

Propofol and fentanyl are what they use in the ED to do a hip reduction. Sorry but I want more than that for surgery.

I’m pretty sure they also get sedation.

That is what they use for a colonoscopy but not for surgery.
