Not really sure what the deal with the royalty thing is but it seems to be a thing. I even saw a commercial where a woman declared herself a queen and her dog was depicted as bowing before her.

I think I know what she is referring to when she says, "I'm a queen... California."

The origin of the the name California has never been determined. But one theory, which has gained more attention recently, is that it is named from Calafia, a fictional black queen, from an early 16th century book by a Castilian author.

Calafia rules over an island kingdom of black women, but is entirely fictional.
