Any other suggestions for desert survival for dummies?

Consider a nice vacation in an air conditioned beach house instead of Death Valley.

My wife and I had made the trip in Nevada along the "Lonliest Road in America", US 50 from Carson City to Ely - 320 miles.

There's only about 3 places where you can find civilization in that entire stretch.

At one point, we pulled over and looked east and west. We were the only car as far as the eye could see.

You are told to make sure your tank is full, and you're packing water bottles. Cellular service is non-existent.

Beautiful part of the country, notwithstanding.

“Forget Fix-a-Flat. Not reliable. Get plugs and a GOOD compressor.”

Agree...I finally learned how to plug a tire after decades of ‘bringing flats in’ for repairs. Despite what many claim, if you plug a tire correctly (and it’s not on a sidewall), they last forever.

Now I have kits with an air pump, plugs, and tools. Used them a few times, but just at my house, and they worked fine.

...and no, I don’t even go off-road, just like to be able to do repairs rather than rely on others.

“They weren’t married...?”

Why would they, they’re Democrats.

Dumb-asses for going in April to Death Valley. Go either in mid-winter, or not at all. But I suspect they were helping out with the coup in DC for the past several months, so they couldn’t get free.

First and foremost tell someone what area you will be going to and when you should be back in communication again. Call the local authorities, the park service, or BLM. That is their job. And be sure and let them know when you do get back out.

Survival blankets ( the thin metallic ones) and a mirror ( use the one in the car) ....use mirror to signal and the blankets have a multiude of uses, for warmth, for shelter, I second whoever suggested a land Epirb as a locator.....cell phones are not reliable....and a boat horn will blast a signal for miles.

Still not clear what killed him - water, hypothermia, or a fall.....or why they made such a stupid decision to scale a cliff ...should have been prepared to stay with the car for at least 3 days and light signal fire at night

Yep, #1 first priority. Grew up in that desert and you never go without telling someone what area you are going to and when you will be back out.

"Death Valley got that name for a reason. "

First thing that came to my mind. But Leftist think all of our ancestors were idiots, so I can understand why they wouldn't put any credence in the judgement of those who named the place.

Yes, you can also buy or rent emergency locator beacons. In an emergency, press a button and Search and Rescue is automatically notified. Some have limited texting capabilities so that you can keep in touch with home base.

A few years ago I bought a kit then had a run of flat tires. I used all the plugs within 3 weeks on my car and a friends.

LOL - same seemed to happen with me. Bought the plugs, and the flats started materializing right away - good some good practice though!

I’m in agreement here. Sadly it sounds like these folks were not experienced at all. I would have driven that vehicle on the rims til it just wouldn’t go anymore. I also would not go anywhere remote without renting a Sat phone. One call and help is on the way.

For my job I frequently visit construction sites. Flat tires are pretty frequent.

The Bay Bridge in Maryland is considered by many to be one of the scariest bridges to cross. I once fried a tire on a dual axle trailer about a mile onto the bridge. Drove the other 6 miles on the rim.

Funny thing was, that day I bought an impact socket for the lug nuts on the trailer.

IMO the Rt. 301 bridge over the Potomac is scarier than the BB. Both are bad.
